Car offered at:
www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/jaguar/xke/2357030.html

Seller's description:
Location: North Canton, Ohio, 44720
Stock #: Doug A
VIN #: 1S72963B
Mileage: 47,611
Transmission: Auto
Condition: Excellent
Exterior: Green
Interior: Tan Leather

38 years ago the current owner was wanting to find the right, fairly new, low mileage XKE and accidentally ran into a lady in town that had one! It was April 27th 1981. 24476 miles and less then 10 yrs old. How lucky is that? Represented as original mileage in 1981 and current owner says still original mileage.

He has had all kinds of high line exotic cars over the years but has always had the special XKE tucked away for special times. Now it's time to share it with someone else.

Most of the maintenance since 1981 was performed by a local shop (Layland Motors) where they have since 1976 perform service, repairs, and rotisserie restorations on XKE's and other special vehicles.

Documents of more significant services performed during the last 38 years can be seen

Some of most significant features (but not all):
V-12 Cylinder engine
Air Conditioning
Automatic Transmission
Real Wire Wheels
Stainless steel exhaust system
AM-FM Single Disc Radio
Power Antenna
Telescope Steering Column
Leather Seating Area
Heater & Defroster
Power Steering & Brakes
Fitted Cloth Cover

Paint:
Very smooth and shiny / matches well but not absolutely perfect as with any professional paint blending

You can see under the hood, fuel filler door, and spare tire storage that it is originally a green car.

Older and poss original paint and repaint as needed to keep presentable / to be a nice, mostly original car for enjoyable driving

Only when inspected in bright fluorescent light you see light cracking on partial roof, rear fender tops, wiper mount area, that typically doesn't show outside / See pics /

Some light chips brush touched in normal wear areas including outside edge of hatch, back door edges, edges of hood where meet cowl, headlight buckets / Also touch up 1” chip left fender

Body:
All upper surfaces, hood, top, and hatch areas are straight and correct

Exception being a light dent and nick touched up 6-8 inches back from grill area / see pics

Sides are presentable but there are some light dings that are below the drivers door handle / multiple that can be seen at an angle and others in front and behind handle

On pass side there are a few little dents below door handle as well as a couple more toward front tire / see pics at angle / dents don't have broken paint for the most part

Magnetic Paint Gauge:
In doing a couple sample readings on each painted panel of the car, it would appear that most of the top surfaces are mostly in the 10-14 mils of paint materials

We don't find any areas without magnetic pull indicating non steel areas. Whatever paint repair was performed must have been professionally done and paint depth kept close to proper levels

The cowl area near the wipers, and a few rear quarter spots and nose reads a little higher with a small amount of overspray on the right rear rubber piece

The bills indicate some paint work in those areas and so that makes sense

Chrome and Bright Work:
Chrome and other bright work seems to be placed and mounted properly

All bright work though not brand new, it has good reflective qualities and is nice and shiny without any noticed damage

We detected a minuet amount of pitting on rear side window frames and it would possibly be polished to improve

Exception being left front bumper guard has a little more wear and scratches on the inside edge

Glass:
The 2 rear side windows and rear window have the Tri Plex logo on them / both door glass logos are Climaglass.

Windshield has no logo and has a few pin head sized knicks from normal wear and a fine wiper scratch in the first 12” of right side wiper travel that can't be felt with a finger nail and may be improved by polishing

Side and rear glass are very clear, no cracks ,scratches, or DE-lamination

Tires and Wheels:
The wire wheels have a nice shiny appearance but do show some wear

Elbow grease and some time could bring them to a higher level / see up close pics of wheels and zoom in

The outside front side of rims and inside hubs have light pitting but shine well. Most spokes have light pitting but have a very bright shine. Each wheel has approx or maybe 6 or so spokes that have lost the shiny finish

Knock offs all show some wear and shine but the left front has lost much of it's chrome.

Interior:
Was nicely restored some years ago / see bill copy / professionally done in leather seating area / restoration looks to include seats, arm rest, carpet, door and side panels, rocker covers and possibly headliner. Appears to be similar to OEM design

Whatever was not replaced seems to have held up very well with obviously little exposure

Trunk appears to have been restored as part of the interior restoration and matches well in theme and coloring

Removing floor cover shows the 5th wire wheel and Michelin 185 X 15 tire, original coloring of car, newer fuel tank.

Engine and Transmission:
Engine and engine bay area has been left original without cosmetics, painting or polishing therefore you can see and better understand the maintenance and repairs performed over the years

The service records will reflect an engine reseal that took place / the pictures will show more significant servicing that was performed over the 38 years

This current year a sticking carb float left some stain on the left side of engine area and the car also received a general inspection at that time

Appearance shows the Antifreeze tank and Compressor may have been replaced in recent years but yet so much of the engine area parts have survived just as the day it was built.

Chassis:
We see no rust perforation or rust repair / sub-frame components all look solid without rust perforation / don't see any repairs to floors and appears well preserved underneath

Left all natural and that makes it very easy to see its real condition / see some of the original color paint / minimum light surface rust / slight deform of metal where has been picked up on a rack over the years / some light and older rustproofing exists /

Car is on rack at Layland Motors ( when did pictures) who is a facility who has serviced this XKE mostly over the years and who also specializes in 60's & 70's Jaguar service and restoration / they drove the car and said seems that drive train is operating properly and Air Conditioning is blowing cold air / they pointed out vents in rockers and noted how rust free / pointed out nose inside front looks good without noticeable damage / lower intake has typical nose curb issues / light oil seepage is typical with these cars / power steering has some leakage / stainless exhaust system is very positive / nut, bolts, sheet metal edges, shows little weather or exposure. / oil pan light seepage / trans pan light seepage / ½ drop oil below converter / Calipers all 4 look dry

Test Drive:
Chad spent much time with the car and drove locally a couple times / steers very smoothly and precisely / doesn't pull left or right and he didn't notice any pulsation upon braking / starts easily & 12 cylinders very smooth acceleration and feels like an electric motor / up and down shift seems proper / Drive train seems to operate as it was designed to / owners manual suggests 91 octane leaded fuel

Owners manual & 1 set of keys included
Radio / AM & FM work fine with antenna up / FM has better reception / CD player is working

Vehicle must be in Drive to insert CD / Rear speaker have good sound

See Service repair order test drive notes/ Service facility indicated running and shifting properly and drive train seems to be operating ok

Price: $49,800

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
