Auction description:

1962 Jaguar E-Type

Colour Opalescent Silver Grey

Odometer 38,747 Miles

Engine size 3800

Location Devon, previously Thousand Oaks, California

Country United Kingdom

Estimate £130,000 - £150,000

• Stunning matching numbers Open Two Seater

• Originally supplied to Frankfurt, Germany in 1962

• Invoices totalling £50,000+

• Recent bare metal body restoration

• Extensive engine rebuild

• Beautiful colour combination, exquisite inside and out

This E-Type was built to European specification and supplied to the distributor Peter Lindner in Frankfurt, Germany, and was then delivered to Lt R L Crutchfield (US Army) in 1962. He returned to USA - California in 1965 taking the E with him and it had remained there until 2018 when it was purchased from a private collector and returned to UK.

Additional data on ownership is unknown however, reports online suggest it being sold at auction in 1991 as a ground up restoration and the colour as British Racing Green, in 2002 in Arizona with a another respray, still British Racing Green, rechromed bumpers and restored interior with original materials and then once again at another auction in Monterey California also in 2004.

An advert for the vehicle was also discovered in 2007 listing it for sale. Certificate of a title change in 2014 is recorded, which looks to have occurred after another rebuild carried out in 2011/2012 by Bonnets to Boots, a Californian Classic Car specialist.

It was purchased and imported in 2018, UK registered 2019, by the current owner who instructed an engine rebuild and inspection as well as some additional interior work such as new door card trims and floor carpets.

THE PAPERWORK

Included with the car is paperwork from the rebuild carried out by Bonnets to Boots and the parts purchased by them from XKs Unlimited. This paperwork dated 2011/2012 also notes the mileage as 38,593.

A substantial rebuild was carried out by this California based classic specialist but to ensure everything was how it was described the current owner commissioned for the engine to be stripped and rebuilt here in the UK. The invoice wasn’t present for this work but will be supplied.

In addition, an invoice for a complete bare metal body restoration is present as well as bills for the new black Mohair hood and relevant trims.

THE EXTERIOR

This car, simply put, is phenomenal. Enzo Ferrari once said ‘’The most beautiful car ever made’’ and 60 years on his words still ring true. From every angle this car is gorgeous, the Opalescent Silver Grey paint is immaculate and gives the car an elegance only a Jag E-Type could carry.

The chromework gleams in the light, the car is a perfect combination of exquisite paint and lustrous chrome. The trademark wire wheels are in great condition and in the factory offset.

The roof is brand new courtesy of Suffolk & Turley; a black Mohair was chosen, an attractive addition and keeps the car sophisticated and classy. Once folded away, you’re hit with the realism of how good this open two seater looks and can only imagine how good it must feel to drive one of these incredible cars.

THE INTERIOR

The tan brown interior is a fabulous complement to the silver exterior. The main refurbishment was carried out in the US but items such as the floor carpets and door cards were renewed here in the UK.

The leather seats are in great condition, with only a small indication of use. The floor carpets are brand new and untouched, the dash and radio are also in great order. As you sit at the helm of this British bullet, hands wrapped around the original wood steering you are overcome by its pure excellence, you cannot withstand its enchantment, it's just wonderful inside and out.

THE MECHANICS

On request the 3.8L straight six fired up with no issue and ticked over confidently as it awaited to be manoeuvred. The roar from these 3.8’s is unforgettable, shivers are sent down spines and flashbacks to pictures on bedroom walls are initiated. This car has had an engine rebuild in the US and at the behest of the current owner then stripped, inspected and rebuilt here in the UK by Jaguar specialists Frazer Eitel Restorations of Cheshire. Every component was checked thoroughly and is how it should be.

Several times the car was started and manoeuvred, gear changes and steering were pleasant and imperceptible. The next custodian should feel confident that this car has been cared for comprehensively in the last 10 years and with the right future care, it will be able to be enjoyed for years to come.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
