The seller says he was “looking to buy a Jaguar” when he encountered this 1972 Jaguar E-type Series III Roadster at a Jaguar museum that was connected with a dealership. He relates that “the original owner bought it new in 1973 and registered it each year through 1987. At some point after that, he returned the car to the Jaguar dealership,” which then passed it to the museum. He says, “I bought it, and the title was signed over to me from the original owner in March of 1995.” After nearly three decades of ownership, health reasons have motivated the seller to part with the Jaguar. The Smiths odometer showed 30,213 miles at the time of submission.

POWERTRAIN Jaguar’s 5.3-liter OHC V12 powers this E-type. Fuel and air are delivered via a quartet of Zenith-Stromberg 175 CD2SE carburetors. When new, the 24-valve, all-aluminum powerplant was rated at 241 horsepower and 285 lb-ft of torque in U.S. trim. The engine is believed to be original and never rebuilt, per the seller, who explains that the car starts easily with “a little choke” when cold. “It never has smoke,” he says. A four-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, and “all gears run smoothly,” he explains. There are “no current leaks or weeps noticed,” the seller mentions.

EXTERIOR Exterior this Jaguar is finished in Pale Primrose yellow. The seller says, “This car has the original paint and it remains in very good condition.” He explains that he spotted “no dents or scratches,” but he points out “four very tiny paint chips on opening edges.” Photos appear to show glossy, well-applied paint, good-quality brightwork, and no obvious corrosion. Reportedly, there is “no visible rust on painted areas of the exterior,” though he feels that “there may be minor rust underneath the car, and there is some rust in the engine compartment.” The black convertible top is reported to have been replaced, and the present one is “like new and functions well.” All of the car’s glass is said to be “excellent,” as are the weather seals. There are “no leaks,” he says, and “all lights work.”

INTERIOR Based on photos, this car’s seats are upholstered in Biscuit leather. “They work fine,” the seller says, referring to the adjustment mechanisms, but a “small area on one headrest seam needs a few stitches.” Photos of the seats appear to show light creasing. The coordinating tan carpeting is noted a “good” by the seller, who states that the heat and air conditioning both work, as do the manual windows and door locks. The car retains its original AM/FM radio that “works, but not very well.” Photos of the dash seem to show slight chipping to the crackle black panels around the air vents and some flaking of the finish on the choke lever. The seller mentions no issues with the car’s gauges or interior lighting.

CHASSIS Suspension bushings and shocks absorbers are in “good condition” with “no visible damage,” according to the seller. He indicates he replaced the upper and lower ball joints, outer tie rod ends, and seals in 1995. The four-wheel-disc brakes have “no issues” and “work well.” The power rack-and-pinion steering is reported to operate as intended, with the seller stating that there’s “no play in the wheel.” This E-type rides on a set of 15-inch wire wheels, including a full-size spare wheel. Bridgestone 205/70R15 tires show DOT date codes visible that indicate a 1994 year of manufacture.

DOCUMENTATION The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Ohio title in his name. The seller states he has over $40,000 in OEM replacement parts and maintenance by a specialty sports car service with receipts and documentation since ownership in 1995. It also comes with the original manual, sales brochure, wheel knock-off and tool kit. This 1972 Jaguar E-type Series III Roadster appears to be sorted and ready for its next driver to cruise with the authority of its V12 engine and with the top down.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
