This Jaguar E-Type 1 4.2-Litre Roadster was dispatched on 15 March 1965 and delivered to Jaguar Cars in New York. Originally presented in Opalescent Maroon with a black interior and top, the car was sold through Kingsfield Motors Inc. of Englewood, New Jersey, on 19 April 1965. Kingsfield Motors’ salesman P. Marshall sold the car to Edwin Riley of North Bergen. Options listed on the invoice included a hardtop, radio, bumper guards, and a racing mirror. Out the door, Mr. Riley acquired this fine Jaguar for $6,165.50.

The car is believed to have remained in Riley family ownership into the 1980s. At some point in the car’s life, it was repainted to the current shade of black it is presented in today. Exterior features still include the factory hardtop, black soft top, driver’s side Talbot-style mirror, and bumper guards. The car rides on Firestone FR710 thin whitewall radial tires mounted on chrome knock-off wire wheels. Four-wheel disc brakes bring the car to a safe stop, with the front discs having been upgraded to a Wilwood configuration for improved stopping power. The interior is presented in black leather featuring an adjustable wood-rimmed steering wheel, Smiths instruments, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio.

Accompanying the car is the original invoice from Kingsfield Motors, Inc., original State of New Jersey Certificate of Ownership, 4.2 E-Type operating, maintenance, and service book, as well as Periodic Maintenance Voucher booklet, pamphlet of Jaguar sales and service centers in the U.S. and Canada, and the Manufacturer’s Warranty pamphlet.

The E-Type is arguably the most iconic road car produced by Jaguar, with Series 1 examples being the most desirable, and especially those powered by the improved 4.2-liter engine.

This 1965 Jaguar XKE roadster was sold new by Kingsfield Motors of Englewood, New Jersey in April 1965, and it reportedly remained in the original owner’s family until the mid-2000s. A subsequent owner commissioned a refurbishment, which was completed in 2010 and included a color change from the original Opalescent Maroon to black. The car retains a black interior and black softtop, and a factory hardtop is included as well. Power is by a numbers-matching 4.2-liter inline-six backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. This Series 1 XKE is now offered by the selling dealer with the factory hardtop, original paperwork, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, and a clean California title.

The black finish is a color change from maroon, and the seller notes scratches in the paint that do not show up on photographs. A dimple in the center of the hood is reportedly the result of closing the hood with the radiator cap open. Covered headlights and triple wipers are features of the Series 1 E-Type, and this car was optioned with an exterior racing mirror.

The removable factory hardtop is depicted in photos, and the folding convertible top is shown raised above. Chrome wire wheels feature knock-off hubs and wear Firestone whitewall tires. A factory knock-off hammer is included, along with a jack and a kneel pad.

Black leather bucket seats exhibit creasing. A tonneau cover for the softtop is included and also is shown. A wood-rim steering wheel and toggle switches are XKE features. The dash retains the factory AM/FM radio. The odometer reads just under 44,500 miles, approximately 200 of which were added by the selling dealer during less than six months of ownership.

The matching-numbers 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six is fed by triple SU carburetors. Service in April 2019 included a new battery, timing adjustment, a new valve cover gasket, an oil change, coolant flush. Wilwood brakes have been equipped, and additional photos of the underside can be seen in the gallery below.

The original invoice shows a base price of $5768 and the following options: hardtop ($252), radio ($75), bumper guards ($50), and racing mirror ($15). With a license fee of $5.50, the total came to $6165.50.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate notes that the car was dispatched to New York on March 15, 1965. A photo in the gallery shows the serial number on the engine, 7E 2869, which matches that shown on the certificate as well as the data plate in the engine compartment and on the cylinder head. The original sales contract, along with a warranty card, registration card, service book, knock-off hammer, and kneel pad are included.
