Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

This late model Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster (often called the ‘Series 1.5’) is a smart example of the legendary sports car, benefitting from a previous specialist restoration.

Under the sweeping bonnet is a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated inline-six, now fed by triple SU carburettors and producing up to 265bhp, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.

The odometer reads just 52,420 miles, which is not warranted but may well be accurate.

Originally a left-hand drive car exported to the US from the factory in 1968, it has since been converted to right-hand drive.

The car was sourced in California and imported to the UK in 1994. More recently, it was imported to Australia in 2009 and comes with the certification letter from Jaguar in 1991 confirming the chassis and engine number.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

As a late Series 1 - often referred to unofficially as the ‘Series 1.5’ - it has the open headlights without the glass covers, but retains the earlier body style features.

This E-Type Roadster has been refinished in the original factory colour combination of Signal Red with a black soft-top roof and black leather interior, accented by a wood rim steering wheel.

The interior features the full complement of Smiths instrument dials and a period-correct radio. The dashboard has been converted from the ‘Series 1.5’ black rocker switches to the earlier style toggle switches.

The car is accompanied by various service records, registration documents, a certificate from Jaguar, as well as an original spare wheel, jack and knock-off hammer.

CONDITION

There is no known bodywork damage on the car.

The eye-catching Signal Red paintwork is reported to be in good condition with the vendor noting a scuff on the passenger side lower front bumper, and some minor scratches and paint chips around the car.

Climbing into the Roadster, the interior is in very good shape, with some light creasing to the leather seats, but no significant wear. There is some minor ‘patina’ to the switches and some discoloration to the centre armrest.

There are no known electrical or mechanical faults with the car, but the vendor notes that the nearside lock needs a slight adjustment.

The most recent roadworthy test was recorded as a clean pass.

SERVICE HISTORY

The most recent maintenance was carried out during December 2021 by a classic car specialist. The work consisted of an engine oil change and a roadworthy inspection.

The previous service was carried out by the car's former owner.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
