The 1E prefix isn't part of the VIN for this car. This has been confirmed on the Heritage Trust Information. It has been confirmed by Jaguar that the very first 4.2L cars (perhaps 200) did not have the prefix.

I owned 1E30036 from 1982 until 1998. To my knowledge it was the 36th LHD, 4.2-liter FHC built, probably making it one of the first 200 4.2-liter cars. The "1E" prefix was stamped into the front subframe in the usual location, and was also on the chassis plate. An interesting note regarding the chassis plate was that it was modified from a 3.8-liter plate. As the new, all-syncro gearbox used gear oil instead of SAE 30W engine oil, the gearbox lubricant info was "edited" with tin snips and the portion containing the correct info placed under it.

I have to correct my last comment. I found some photos of 1E30036, and the "1E" prefix was not stamped onto the front subframe. It was, however, stamped onto the chassis plate.
