This 1965 Jaguar XKE is a Series I coupe that was acquired in 2008 by the current owner, who commissioned a mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment. The car was disassembled before being refinished in green over a refreshed beige leather interior, the numbers-matching 4.2-liter inline-six received replacement timing chains and its triple SU carburetors were rebuilt, the clutch assembly for the four-speed manual transmission was replaced, and the brakes were overhauled. Features include chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels, Wilwood front disc calipers, three-point restraints, a RetroSound stereo, and a one-wire alternator. This XKE is now offered at no reserve in California on dealership consignment with a removed set of side mirrors, a set of Dunlop brake calipers, and other parts as well as a JDHT certificate, an owner’s manual, leftover carpet material, a hub-removal tool, a jack and storage bag, rubber floor mats, and a clean Hawaii title.

The selling dealer states that the car was disassembled and stripped in 2008, and over the following three years rust was repaired and the exterior and engine compartment were refinished in a green shade from Jaguar’s modern color palette. Stainless-steel bumpers with guards have been installed, and the seller notes pitting in the chrome window surrounds as well as chips and stress cracks in the finish around the car.

Chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels utilize two-ear knockoffs as well as stainless-steel spokes and are mounted with 205/70 BFGoodrich Traction T/A tires that show 2009 date codes. During the refurbishment Wilwood front brake calipers were installed using safety-wired adaptors, the rear calipers were rebuilt by Apple Hydraulics, and the rotors were replaced. A remote bleeder system was installed for the inboard rear calipers, and the braking system has been flushed with DOT5 fluid.

In 2016 the interior was redone with replacement seat bolsters, beige leather seat covers, and a matching headliner, trim, and wool carpeting. Tan three-point restraints were installed in 2020, and a RetroSound stereo is mounted in the center stack.

A 16″ wood-rimmed steering wheel with an E-Type/Jaguar crest has been installed ahead of Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and auxiliary gauges that extend across the dashboard. The clock has been rebuilt. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 90,500 miles, and true mileage is unknown.

The 4.2-liter inline-six was cleaned and refinished during the overhaul, at which time the engine main- and rod-bearing clearances were checked. The timing chains and tensioners were replaced, and a 2″ exhaust system from Classicfabs of Scotland was fitted along with a one-wire Delco alternator. In 2020 the triple SU carburetors were rebuilt, the valves and timing chain were adjusted, intake valve-stem seals were added, a spin-on oil-filter adapter was installed, and the water pump was replaced. The battery was replaced in 2021, and approximately 40 pages of receipts and records.

The engine-block stamping reads 7E1720-9 and matches the cylinder-head stamping as well as the plaque affixed to the body and the JDHT certificate.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a synchronized four-speed manual transmission. The clutch assembly and clutch cylinders have been replaced, and the clutch system received stainless-steel hard lines and braided hose.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate indicates a manufacture date of November 16, 1964, the factory color scheme, serial numbers, and delivery to Jaguar Cars in New York. Materials, parts, and paperwork will accompany the vehicle

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
