Sellers description:
1966 Jaguar XK-E, 4.2, series 1 coupe, matching numbers, 2 owner (excluding myself) “California Black Plate” car, 68,622 original miles. Never any significant damage or rust, this is an un-restored, un-molested, well preserved example. This is the first time in over 40 years the car has been offered for public sale. Car was sold new in 1966 at Peninsula Motors in Palo Alto, California and has remained in the local area since new. The second owner (a Jaguar club member and enthusiast) acquired the car in 1968 and kept the car in good original condition. I recently acquired the car from his family after his death and done what work was necessary to bring the car to roadworthy condition. The paint is original with a few areas that have older touched-ups for chips or scratches but over all is in very good condition for its age. The touched up areas are a slight mismatch in color and have some checking. They show under the right lighting conditions but overall paint is very presentable. (I feel that repainting this car would only destroy its originality). The sheet metal appears to have never been rusted or damaged except for a minor dent under the left rear bumper that was repaired years ago, however the filler that was used has now started to crack and lift a little, see photo. (Someone must have backed the car into a low object as the bumper and mounting area wasn’t damaged). The chrome is original and overall is in very good condition and appears to have never been removed from the body. The interior is original and is in good condition for its age. The one exception is that at some point the two foot well carpets have been replaced, they are the correct pattern but of a different carpet material. The leather on the seats and center counsel is dried and has some tearing but is in presentable and usable condition, (the leather on the armrest lid is softer then the seats so it may have been replaced at some point). The rubber shift lever boot was replaced when I had the cover off to verify the transmission number. The headliner has darkened and is stained but is not sagging. (The sunvisors are missing, usually removed by tall drivers). The rest of the interior is in good condition. All glass is original and in good condition. The original rubber door and side window seals are dried and cracking. The engine runs smooth, has good power, oil pressure and compression. The transmission shifts smooth and is quiet, the rear axle is the standard US delivery 3.54-1 ratio. The cylinder head has the original gold paint. The firewall, subframes, and under bonnet paint is original and in very good condition. Some of the factory blue “grease pen” writing is still visible in the area by the brake vacuum reservoir, (the factory used a grease pen to write the body number on the tub before assembly for ease of identification, only on a very few of the un-restored cars can this still be found). Most of the hardware is original, a few nuts/bolts and the hose clamps have been replaced over the years. The under bonnet items that I’ve repainted are the heater box, header tank brackets, alternator safety shield, radiator and stone guard. For safety reasons I’ve replaced all the brake and clutch hydraulic cylinders and flex lines with new ones. The radiator has been cleaned out, a new header tank and hoses installed. The original fan has been replaced with a “Cool Cat” fan assembly (no modifications are required for this installation). The original fan assembly is included but will need to be rebuilt if the new owner wishes to utilize it, (the modern fan greatly improves airflow and I recommend not re-installing the original fan if the car is to be driven regularly). The fuel tank has been cleaned and sealed, the original thin walled “white” plastic fuel line has been replaced with new neoprene fuel hose. The fuel pump is an American replacement. The carburetors have been cleaned and rebuilt. The wheels are original and in presentable condition, the tires are older Michelins with good tread but I would recommend replacing them if high speed driving will be done. The exhaust system is in good condition with new tail pipes and resonators. The owner’s pouch which has the owner’s manual, dealer lists and other documents are still with the car as are the original jack and tool kit. These items are the ones supplied with the car when new, not just a mix of tools and paperwork thrown together. Vehicle has current California title and registration in my name, and is registered to the “Black & Gold” plates. If the buyer is a California resident it’s a clean title transfer retaining the black plates.

Overall this car is in very good original condition which is a very rare find today. The preserved cars may not be as spectacular as the “every nut and bolt” restored cars but ultimately cars like this will be the most valuable because of the preserved state and the value won’t be as affected by current market trends. Vehicle is located near Santa Cruz, California (75 miles south of San Francisco).

The recent work includes:
Brakes overhauled, replaced all 8 wheel calipers, interconnect pipes, master cylinder, vacuum booster unit and flex lines.

Replaced clutch master and slave cylinders and flex line.

Replaced front engine mounts.

Replaced rear axel carrier mounts.

Replaced tail pipes and resonators

Replaced steering rack mounts, bellows, and upper-column bearings.

Radiator tanks removed and core cleaned, new header tank and cooling system hoses.

Repainted radiator, stone guard & header tank mounting brackets. Modern cooling fan installed.

Removed and cleaned heater core, repainted heater box.

Adjusted valves, cam timing and upper chain tension.

Removed and cleaned distributor unit. Replaced ignition wires, conduit, points, condenser, rotor, cap, wire terminals and spark plugs.

Replaced rubber shift lever boot.

Changed all fluids and filters, greased all fittings.

Gas tank boiled and sealed, replaced plastic fuel hoses, cleaned & rebuilt carburetors.

Electrical system checked, voltage regulator & flasher units replaced.

Known changes made by the pervious owner:

The ignition switch is a later “square” key replacement type.

A switch to manually turn on the cooling fan is installed by the "driver’s side" speaker.

A radio/cassette deck is installed.

The “Amco” bars installed by the dealer have been removed. (California insurance companies required that these bars be installed if the vehicle was financed).

An American manufacture replacement type fuel pump has been installed.

Sunvisors removed.

Footwell carpets (and presumably) the armrest leather cover have been replaced.

Sellers description: Same as above except small note added regarding the VIN.
Note, Jaguars sold in California in the 1960's had a 3 digit prefix added to Jaguar's vin number. Jxx the "xx" being the year, in this case, J66, ("Jaguar" and "1966" model year). There was a small "reverse" stamped aluminum tag attached with 2 small screws near the ID plate or on the firewall, the location varied do to different dealers installing the tags at the time of the original sale. The reason I'm selling the car is to reduce the number of cars in my collection and to free up storage space.

This is an incredibly original matching numbers black plate California car. White with black interior. It's an extremely straight, solid, and undisturbed example, exuding originality. The car was never fully repainted. The undercarriage is rust free and there is no evidence of collision damage or repairs. The interior is also original. While the new owner will likely replace the upholstery on the seats, top of console, and headliner, cars boasting this level of originality are few and far between.
