Fahrzeugbeschreibung
This 1968 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 2+2 is a highly original example of the marque’s iconic grand tourer, which is ready to be gradually improved by its next owner, or could form the basis of a thorough restoration. It is equipped with the 4.2-litre straight-six engine, fed by twin Stromberg carburettors, and is driven through the four-speed all-synchro manual transmission. The odometer shows an indicated 53,755 miles, which is not warranted but may be correct.
The chassis number confirms that the car is a very late 1968 model year left-hand drive Series 1 – the car is numbered 1E79170 and chassis 1E79221 was the last left-hand drive 2+2 Series 1 built. It was delivered new to the US, and there is a name tag affixed inside the glove box lid, which may well be that of the first owner.
As a late Series 1 – often referred to unofficially as the ‘Series 1.5’ – it has the open headlights without the glass covers. The vendor reports that the body seems straight and solid, with impressive shut lines around the doors, and a bonnet section that is in very good order. It is finished in the British Racing Green hue, with paintwork that is micro-blistered in places and with a few scuffs and scratches elsewhere – as documented in the photo gallery below.
All of the exterior rubbers have degraded and will need replacing. The car sits on a set of chrome wire wheels, and all of the brightwork around the body is in fair condition. The light lenses are all present and undamaged.
Inside, the Suede Green leather is visibly aged and worn, but there is no unsightly damage to speak of. It would certainly benefit from a thorough clean to bring out its natural patina. As a late Series 1, the seat feature adjustable backs, and the dashboard is equipped with the black plastic rocker switches.
Ahead of the driver is the classic wood rim Jaguar steering wheel, as well as the full complement of original Smiths instrument gauges. At the back of the car, the boot lining is in good order.
While the engine has previously started and run since being in the UK, the next owner should assume that numerous mechanical jobs will be required to get the car back into reliable running order. The car has not been put through a UK MOT, but is accompanied by a valid NOVA certificate from HMRC, confirming it is now a taxes-paid vehicle. All four wheels are fitted with 185/R15 Michelin X Red Line tyres.
This Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2-litre 2+2 is a great opportunity to acquire an original and solid car that is ripe for a programme of restoration. Whether simply overhauled and used as an honest driver, or taken on as the base for an exhaustive renovation, this is a recognisable and desirable classic that seeks an industrious enthusiast.
