Ebay item 5/18/05

Current bid $23,300.00 (Reserve not met), 7 bids, 6 days left in auction.

Sellers description:
I am parting with my thirty-five year old Black, English mistress; a 1970 Jaguar E-Type roadster I purchased from her third owner approximately four years ago. Chassis #1R12922, Body #4R7522, Engine #7R11435-9 and Gear Box #KE12700. I possess a clean and clear title to this automobile.

I originally purchased this XKE as a pleasure driver. As a Series II, it is similar in size and operating cost to the Series I when compared to the Series III, but has convenience and safety features making it the more practical driver. However, at its current level of restoration, this car creates a spectacle where I am no longer comfortable driving it or leaving it unattended.

The present mileage for this numbers matching example is 76,518. I have only driven this car less than 1,700 miles under perfect weather conditions during its four year restoration. I personally stripped and repainted the passenger compartment as well as the seat and convertible top frames prior to investing nearly $7,000.00 in the professional installation of a concours-quality major Original Specification Jaguar Interior (OSJI) interior, boot kit and canvas hood/envelope. The interior is identical to its original cinnamon Connolly leather, Hardura and Wilton wool carpet, and is factory correct for both the British Racing Green or Black exterior color options. It was my preference to have this Jaguar refinished in Black; an additional $5,000.00 investment including preparation, weather stripping and chrome. During the repaint, the rocker panels and boot underside were also chip guarded to prevent road debris damage to the paint. After three years, the body remains free of scratches, dings, dents, and any significant chips.

I have documentation and receipts for the replacement of worn, missing and broken items with original, NOS and high quality reproduction parts. Typical vendors for these parts include OSJI, Welsh Jaguar, SNG Barratt and Terry’s Jaguar. In addition to my efforts, the previous owner installed new manifolds, stainless steel mufflers, glass, rack and pinion steering, and two wire wheels. He also had the dual Zenith Stromberg carburetors rebuilt.

Non-standard replacement items include halogen headlamps, aircraft style seatbelts (The original ones are included in this sale.), a Parrish racing hardtop, 250 watt Pyramid three-way speakers, a 400 watt Boss amplifier, a scissor jack, rubber mats and accelerator cover, and an upgraded Robbins canvas hood with boot cover.

During restoration, I discovered this car was rust proofed when delivered to its original owner in Virginia before he was transferred to California. I have licenses confirming this XKE’s California registration.

The presence of this rust proofing throughout the monocoque tub and on sections bearing the body number lead me to believe the car retains much of its original sheet metal.

The prior owner purchased this car from its second owner after discovering it in long term storage, and I ultimately acquired the automobile shortly after his relocation to Louisiana. The roadster retains a Louisiana 2000 State Inspection sticker.

The electrical system has been evaluated by a professional Jaguar mechanic and all gauges (including the clock) as well as safety equipment are operable. I performed the cosmetic restoration of the gauges. The original British Leyland AM/FM Stereo has been restored by Southern Electronics.

The engine, transmission and other mechanicals have been evaluated by certified Master mechanics and found to be in sound condition. This is evident in the vehicle’s operation. Items I am aware require attention are the horn contact which is currently bypassed with another horn stem button, worn emergency brake pads, and improperly adjusted door glass. There is a very small chip in the glass I may have repaired prior to the sale. I also recommend the car’s hardtop weather stripping be replaced.

The Jaguar E-Type’s/XKE heritage and status is well-known among enthusiasts. Other than to say this is a very good example, I will reserve further comment and ask that you consider recent photographs taken for this auction.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
