Restored 1969 Jaguar XKE Coupe

This 1969 Jaguar XKE Series 2 coupe is an original California car that has been restored by its owner of 22 years. The car has had just two long-term owners and comes with a large history file and all paperwork from new, including the original dealership sales form. It underwent a full mechanical restoration that was completed in 2003 and received a bare-metal repaint in 2012. Lifetime mileage is just under 110k, with the most recent service about 2,000 miles ago. The seller has 60 years of experience restoring British cars and has logged several thousand miles behind the wheel in the last couple years, saying it is a superb driver and elegant looker.

Sold new by Poole Buick & Jaguar in Costa Mesa, Calif., the coupe has been a California car its entire life and still wears its original black license plate. Series 2 XKEs lost the glass headlight covers of the Series 1's due to new U.S. regulations. The chrome reportedly is original and is described as good for its age. Glass also is original. New Dayton stainless wire wheels and new tires were installed in 2012. The seller says he's put about 3,000 miles on the car in the past 2 years.

In 2012 the car was repainted in the original light blue. Paint stripping, metal work (some minor rust repair was needed under the spare; the driver's side footwell was replaced by the previous owner), primer application, sanding and the final cut and buff was done by the seller, who was trained in the trade in 1957 and has 60 years' experience repairing, servicing and restoring British cars. Application of the single-stage Light Blue paint was done by a local Yreka, Calif., shop and a receipt for that work is included. In addition, all rubber moldings and glass seals have been replaced.

The interior is largely original and the seats were recovered in leather about 30 years ago. The clock is reported to be inoperative, but the seller says all the other instruments are functional (the tach needle can be slow to return to idle speed). He notes that the dash switch panel has been replaced because most of the switches were failing. Series 2 cars had rocker switches instead of the previous toggle units.

The seller began a mechanical restoration of the car when he first acquired it, but his involvement in vintage racing delayed completion until 2003. Work included a complete engine rebuild, head rebuild, new transmission bearings and seals and a new clutch and throwout bearing.

Machine work was done by a shop in Costa Mesa, Calif. The 4.2-liter six was rated at 265 horsepower from the factory and had two Zenith-Stromberg carburetors in place of the triple SU's of the Series 1 cars.

The seller says the engine is original. Other mechanical work included replacing/rebuilding all hydraulics, replacing the brake roters and replacing the brake pads. Though no Heritage Certificate is included, the seller has firsthand knowledge of the car's history from the time it was purchased new by a friend as well as the supporting paperwork. Overall this looks to be a well-documented and nicely prepared E-Type.
