By 1971, Jaguar's jaw-dropping E-Type had been in production for a decade. Despite continual improvements, new emissions legislation in the all important American market threatened to strangle the big cat's performance. Jaguar responded by giving its revered sports car new claws in the shape of a 5343cc V12 developed from the still born XJ13 Le Mans project car. The new engine was both effortlessly powerful and eerily smooth. With some 272bhp and 304lbft of torque on tap, the Series III E-Type once again had 150mph in its sights not to mention ferocious acceleration (contemporary road tests speak of 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds for manual variants). A revised wheelbase yielded better cabin space and together with wider tracks front and rear and new anti-dive front suspension geometry and wider tyres gave improved road-holding. Built on the 23rd December 1971 but not registered until March 1972, this particular example is described as being in very good overall condition. With expired MOT certificates dating back to 1978 and service records from 1979 onwards much of its history is known. A former concours winner, it was bought by Mr & Mrs J Taylor in 1987 at a mileage of 47,000. Over the course of the next thirteen years, they treated it to a full brake system overhaul (1987) and a bare metal re-spray including sundry pieces of chrome trim and new rubbers (1990) at a cost of £2,500 and £6,500 respectively. Sold by them with an odometer reading of 58,000, it was purchased by the vendor from specialist dealer The E-type Centre in April 2001. Since then, it has received a Waxoyl treatment and been fitted with both a CD player and Thatcham Category One alarm. Rigorously maintained, it is said to be in excellent running order. Finished in dark blue, its versatile 2+2 interior is trimmed in grey leather with black carpets and a wood rimmed steering wheel. Equipped with the more desirable four-speed manual gearbox from new, it has at some stage undergone a hub conversion to enable the fitment of silver painted wire wheels. Offered for sale with V5 registration document, MOT current until September 2004 and extensive history, this V12 E-Type remains a capable and stylish grand tourer.
