Car to be at auction 7/14
classiccars.brightwells.com/viewdetails.php
Auction description:
Lot number 40
Estimate £30,000 - £33,000
Description Jaguar E-Type S3 V12 Manual Coupe
Registration TGJ 238M
Year 1973
Colour British Racing Green
Engine size 5,343 cc
Chassis No. 1S51972
Engine No. 7S12631SA
This British Racing Green example has the desirable manual gearbox and has only covered some 39,700 miles from new in the hands of just five owners. As documents in the substantial history file confirm, it was supplied new via HR Owen of London to Roger Caton of Wolverhampton in August 1973 with 9 stamps in the original Passport to Service book up to 30,032 miles in May 2009.
With just two owners since 1990, it has only been very sparingly used by both of them, clocking up less than 1,000 miles in the last five years. In 2009 it received a fair amount of expenditure including a new exhaust fan-tail, a Toad security system, an uprated starter motor and a new carpet set. Other documents suggest that the bodywork had previously received some light restoration in the early 1990s.
In November last year it was treated to a major bout of fettling when many engine seals and gaskets were replaced (so it does not leak oil); all four rear shocks were fitted with new springs to restore the correct ride height; the front wheels were aligned; it was serviced and had new plugs and leads fitted, the bill for this lot being £1,758.
Appearing to be in very smart condition throughout and driving beautifully as we manouevred it for these pictures, it is currently on SORN but has an MOT until August. Fitted with a Webasto sunroof for open air summer motoring, this low-mileage matching numbers E-Type looks excellent value at the guide price suggested.

Lot number 94
Sale Price £38,500
Make & Model Jaguar E-Type S3 V12 Coupe Manual
Registration TGJ 238M
Year 1973
Colour British Racing Green
Engine Size 5,343 cc
Chassis No. 1S51972
Engine No. 7S12631SA
Documents V5C; due to have fresh MOT; invoices etc
This British Racing Green example has the desirable manual gearbox and has only covered some 40,500 miles from new in the hands of just six owners. As documents in the substantial history file confirm, it was supplied new via HR Owen of London to Roger Caton of Wolverhampton in August 1973 with 9 stamps in the original Passport to Service book up to 30,032 miles in May 2009.
The vendor acquired the car just over two years ago as a retirement present to himself and promptly handed it over to marque specialists XJ Motor Services of Surrey for a thorough going-over to sort out any niggles. Around £4,000 later it was deemed good to go with a new water pump, ReOpus ignition upgrade, new battery plus various other items. Said to run and drive beautifully, it has endured London traffic in the recent sweltering summer with no problems whatsoever, is due to be driven to the Goodwood Revival shortly before the auction and will then be driven from Surrey to Brightwells in time for the sale so the odometer may have just ticked over the 41,000 mark by then.
The history file shows that in November 2013 it was treated to a major bout of fettling when many engine seals and gaskets were replaced (so it does not leak oil); all four rear shocks were fitted with new springs to restore the correct ride height; the front wheels were aligned; it was serviced and had new plugs and leads fitted, the bill for this lot being £1,758. In 2009 it was treated to a new exhaust fan-tail, a Toad security system, an uprated starter motor and a new carpet set. Other documents suggest that the bodywork had previously received some light restoration in the early 1990s.
Fitted with a Webasto sunroof for open air summer motoring, this low-mileage, matching numbers E-Type is due to have a fresh MOT in time for the sale and is ready to enjoy right away.

This one is one of the very last examples – a 1973 2+2 Coupé in traditional British Racing Green, and equipped with Jaguar’s wonderful 5.3-litre V12 engine. It’s also unusual in that it’s a manual, a rare find in a 2+2.
The E-Type comes with lots of history right back to its original owner and has been in the hands of collectors for more than 30 years. It has seen some restoration and repair work throughout its life, but is largely original and comes with a superb tan-coloured interior.

THE INTERIOR
Original tan leather upholstery
Seats in very good condition with minimal wear to driver’s seat
Modern audio upgrade
Original tools and folding rear seat
Webasto sunroof
Inside, the E-Type is in good overall condition with its original beige leather seats in excellent order and matching carpets in good condition. The door cards and headlining are in good order, as is the rear load bay and spare wheel hatch, where the original tools are concealed.
A particularly appealing feature is the car’s full-length Webasto sunroof – it’s watertight and in full working order.
It has a modern USB radio fitted and all of the dials and controls work as they ought to, while the overall condition of the cabin is generally very good, with a vast bank of switches and a smart three-spoke sports steering wheel.
THE EXTERIOR
Repainted in the 1990s
Some underbody repairs
Knock-on wire wheels
Minor pitting to chrome
The upper body was restored in the late 1990s and has stood up well to the past two-and-a-half decades with no major issues. The paint is good other than some fading in areas and some very minor swirls and chips – despite these minor imperfections, it’s a good-looking car and presents very well indeed, sitting on 60-spoke chrome wire wheels and with good tyres all-round.
Some of the chrome is slightly pitted but easily liveable with, but all of the trim in in good order and presents well. Underneath, there are signs of previous welded repairs to the floorpans and rear suspension mounting areas but the repairs appear strong and have been wax-protected for long-term peace of mind.
THE MECHANICS
5.3-litre V12
Four-speed manual with overdrive
Starts and runs well
Jaguar’s mighty V12 is an impressive engine and this one appears to be a great example, starting on the button and running smoothly, with good oil pressure. It has a full service history to 40,239 miles and the MOT history shows minimal annual milage over the past 16 years.
