Sellers description:
ORIGINAL OWNER and LOW MILEAGE 1972 Jaguar XKE V12 2+2 in silver with red leather interior. This car was purchased brand new from a dealership in Philadelphia in 1972 and has been tenderly cared for and garaged ever since by the original owner. Comes with original New Jersey title. All os the original documents relating to the vehicle will go with the sale. Odometer reading is 16107 miles - this is an example car collectors dream about! All serial numbers on the body and engine match - it is the original engine which runs smoothly. Rich red color English leather interior shows little sign of wear and absolutely no cracking. The heating and air conditioning are operable as well as the original AM/FM radio with tape player.

The car was professinally repainted ~ 20 years ago with the matching silver paint scheme to the original finish as well as the replacement of the original tires. Also the rear differential was deal upgraded from the original 3-54 ratio to a more user-friendly (around a small town) 3-31 ratio. Other than these items and minor upkeep and maintenance over the years, this car is near 100% original. The car has no rust whatsoever and there are no dents. All of the flooring inside the vehicle is solid. Minor spotting on the chrome components only. This car is a real gem - one of the prized possessions of a retired MD who lovingly cared for it over the years.

I bought this car from the original owner, a retired doctor in New Jersey in January 2013. At the time, I spoke with the elderly owner (who has since died) and his wife, daughter and two sons, all of whom confirmed that this was an original, one owner car. I have maintained contact with the daughter who happens to live in Annapolis, MD, my hometown. The owner also provided me with the original window sticker, maintenance records and a handwritten notebook he kept of everything he ever did to the Jaguar (including wax jobs!) with dates and details. It was a beautiful, undamaged car (other than a small ding on the right front fender) with no rust and it appeared sound throughout. (We did later discover that there was a repaired, relatively minor dent on the right rear quarter, which probably was the reason the car had been repainted back in the 70's). When I first viewed the car, the emergency brake would not completely release and the engine would not idle. I subsequently discovered that the carburetor rain shields had been installed upside down, locking the linkage and not allowing an idle. I also discovered that at some point (and probably related to this linkage issue), the right muffler had probably accumulated gasoline in it and this had obviously caused a fire inside the muffler, which showed signs of high heat and a melted rubber donut mount. The fire luckily did not escape the muffler and seemed to do no damage to the car mechanically, structurally or cosmetically, other than the floor board above that muffler and the carpet insulation on the rear right floor showed signs of high heat.
I spent a good bit of time cleaning up and detailing the car, and I thought it looked very good and would make a good, very high end driver. I didn't really get around to driving it much, but knew I would have to give some attention to the 20-year-old tires and all original hoses, etc. It also has the usual drips and dried up seals of a car that age. In July of 2015, I decided to bite the bullet and take the car up to Stew Jones in Winsted, CT, with the intention of making it into a really reliable and mechanically superior car without going the concours restoration route (which Stew informed me would run in the $200,000 range). Long story short, I just picked up the car in late September, having invested $100,000 in its refurbishment. The entire drivetrain, front end, rear end and all suspension was removed from the car and rebuilt with all new ancillaries (a project that of course included repainting and detailing the bulkhead (firewall), and engine sub frames, and replating the front suspension pieces, IRS, etc.,) $35,000 went into the engine rebuild (including removal of the smog equipment, a new electronic ignition system, rebuilt heads, rebuilt carbs, new bearings, etc., etc.) and transmission work (including a 5 speed conversion, although I still have the original 4 speed and all other original parts taken off the car) and $65,000 went into the rest of the mechanicals, the body and the interior. The car retains all of its original chrome, which is quite nice, all of its original interior (although the leather on the seat coverings were replaced and there is a new headliner as the foam liner had evaporated). It has a new paint job, still in silver, new tires, rebuilt suspension, new gas tank, fuel pump and gas lines, rebuilt brakes, rebuilt suspension, rebuilt power steering rack, new SS brake and clutch lines, new high capacity radiator and cooling fans, new a/c condenser and components, new SS exhaust system from front to back, new weather stripping throughout. The work is described in several single spaced pages in statements from Stew Jones and several hundred photos provided by Stew, and all I can say is that in spite of the costs, I couldn't be happier. Stew Jones is the guru of Series 3 Jags and a very nice guy--he was honest and really easy to work with. I feel that I got very good value for the money, although it cost a lot. The car looks and drives like it is new, and now has 16,514 miles, which I think will increase steadily as I intend to drive it on nice days on short trips.
