The car had a complete nut and bolt shell off restoration 2017-2018, including drivetrain, engine, transmission. The engine was fully rebuilt to it's high compression (-9) original spec. The Zenith Stromberg carbs were replaced with a complete new set of triple SU's from Burlen and the rear axle was changed to 3.07 from 3.54. All the original parts are kept in inventoried professional boxes should the next caretaker with to return the car to the US specification.

This 1970 Jaguar XKE roadster is a Series II example that was built on August 13, 1970 and dispatched to New York in September of the same year before being delivered to its reported first owner in California. The car is believed to have remained in California until 2007, when it moved to British Columbia, Canada. Following the seller’s acquisition in 2017, a restoration was commissioned that included rebuilding the numbers-matching 4.2-liter inline-six and the four-speed manual gearbox, adding triple SU carburetors, installing 3.07:1 differential gears, a color change to Dark Blue, an interior refresh, and more as outlined below. This XKE is now offered with records and photos from the restoration, documentation dating back to 1979, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, removed parts, a jack and tools, a tonneau cover, and British Columbia registration.

The body panels were removed from the shell for a rotisserie repaint by Jetstream Auto & Custom in Sidney, British Columbia. Period-correct Dark Blue was chosen by the seller in place of the original shade of Willow Green listed on the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.

A factory hardtop was refinished to match the car, and a new black soft top with refurbished hardware was assembled but remains uninstalled in favor of a speedster configuration.

New 15″ wire wheels were added during the restoration along with a matching spare, and they are mounted with Pirelli Cinturato tires and balanced by Longstone. US-market side markers were deleted prior to the repaint in favor of compound European-style lights, and the antenna opening was also deleted from the rear fender. A custom split-zipper tonneau cover is included.

The cockpit was refreshed with a new Cinnamon interior kit from Original Specification Jaguar Interiors, matching the factory trim color listed on the heritage certificate. A new wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel was added, and the factory wheel is included with the sale. A factory radio is retained with a flat-tape antenna under the tunnel carpeting, and the seller notes it works better on FM than AM. Sound deadener was fitted throughout the cabin under the carpeting.

Smiths instruments were refurbished and recalibrated, and LED lighting was added for the dash and other interior illumination. The five-digit odometer shows 49k miles, approximately 2,500 of which have been added since the restoration was completed in May 2018. The seller also drove the car several hundred miles prior to the restoration while assessing how he wanted the work done.

The 4.2-liter XK inline-six was rebuilt and balanced by Owen Automotive in Sidney, British Columbia, with triple SU carburetors sourced from Burlen added in place of the original Stromberg units. New components included 0.020″-overbore high-compression pistons and associated hardware as well as standard-size bearings and an oil pump, water pump, starter, alternator, and performance crankshaft damper. The valves were redone and reseated with new seals, the radiator was recored, and the fans were refreshed. Electronic ignition was added, and a new wiring harness was installed. An oil change, lubrication, and check-up were completed on September 3, 2019. Videos of a cold start can be seen here and here.

Casting number 7R-14073 is shown stamped on the engine block and is also depicted on the flywheel, and it matches the number listed on the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate. The four-speed manual gearbox was also rebuilt during the restoration, and a new clutch and pressure plate were installed. The flywheel was resurfaced and a new ring gear was fitted.

The differential was rebuilt with 3.07:1 gears instead of the factory 3.54:1 ratio, and the suspension was overhauled with the control arms, brackets, and fasteners replated using clear cadmium. A new stainless-steel exhaust system was added along with coated exhaust manifolds. The wheel wells were coated with Gravel Guard prior to reassembly.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists the car’s original colors and component numbers. Factory parts that were removed during the work are included, among them the Stromberg carburetors, manifold, crossover, intake, distributor, steering wheel, and US-market lighting. Also included is a wall hanging system for the hardtop that can be seen in the gallery below.
