Jaguar announced their production E Type in March 1961. The new car had a monocoque chassis with aerodynamic body panels and headlamps faired-in to the wings of either an open 2-seater or fixed head coupe. The familiar XK-based 3.8-litre 265bhp six powered both versions had disc brakes and independent suspension all round, a novelty for Jaguar. Even more attractive to potential buyers - not to mention the Coventry firm's competitors - was the E Type's 150mph top speed and for less than ú2100, too, compared to the rival Aston Martin DB4, which, though capable of similar performance, cost ú3755!
In only slightly modified form, the early E Type proved to be a sensation on the track in production sportscar races and, soon, specially constructed lightweight versions were competing for overall honours in major international events - Briggs Cunningham and Roy Salvadori drove an E Type to a highly creditable fourth overall at Le Mans in 1962.
We are delighted to be auctioning a very special E Type, the 51st chassis no less, one of the just 26 original demonstrators that were produced in July 1961 by the Browns Lane factory in Coventry for each Jaguar dealer. Since then, however, the 3.8-litre roadster has been fully restored in the style of a 'Lightweight' competition E with ú25,000 recently invested on enhancing upgrades. As presented today, 475 TOD would be ideal not only for comfortable road work, but also for occasional rally entries, although a new owner always has the option of being able to develop the car even further for more serious competition eventing.
Even in its present state, however, it is most unlikely that the current specification of this car could be bettered. The attention to details that matter really is most impressive. Serious suitors are advised to clock the following...Le Mans front sill darts, Perspex headlamp covers, lightweight E style bootlid and external catch, period correct Dunlop pattern alloy wheels secured by 3-eared 42mm wheel spinners on peg-drive hubs with new wheel bearings, billet aluminium steering mounts, uprated anti-roll bar and bushes, Leda externally adjustable shock absorbers front and rear, fully overhauled and refinished rear suspension unit, AP cross-drilled 315mm brake discs and alloy calipers, modified and uprated late-type rear brake calipers, new brake and clutch master cylinders, stainless steel braided flexible brake hoses, high power brake servos for the twin system, high specification aluminium radiator conversion, uprated cooling fan, lightweight aluminium header tank, 45DCOE Weber carbs on correct manifolds, modern uprated electric fuel pump conversion, lightweight modern starter conversion, high spec charging system with conversion to alternator, electronic ignition, comp spec plug leads, halogen headlamp conversion, battery isolator, custom-made tubular exhaust manifolds, big-bore exhaust system in stainless steel and 4-point competition harnesses.
Bodywork, opalescent silver grey paintwork, interior trimmed in black, 3786cc 6-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual gearbox are reportedly all in excellent condition and the MOT is current until next February. If you are looking for the ultimate E Type, then look no further than this quite exceptional early example.

Finished in silver with black leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its 3.8 litre engine, four-speed Moss gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. The fifty-first production E-type Roadster built (or so its quoted chassis number of '850051' would imply), '475 TOD' was manufactured on June 22nd 1961. Dispatched by the factory twenty-two days later, the Jaguar's first recorded keeper was a Mr E.G. Dawes of Torquay (Devon). Reportedly converted to its current Lightweight E-type look-a-like configuration by marque specialists J.D. Classics in 2000 / 2001, the work is understood to have been commissioned by ex Ferrari F1 driver Eddie Irvine and to have "cost in excess of £30,000". Despite sporting a Lightweight-style vented hardtop and bootlid not to mention Perspex headlamp covers, Le Mans-esque front sill darts and Dunlop-pattern peg drive alloy wheels (complete with three-eared 42mm spinners), '475 TOD' has apparently been set-up for "comfortable road / rally use" rather than as a 'balls out' racer.
Nevertheless, it features a very impressive specification. Treated to upgraded electrics including "a high-charging alternator, electronic ignition, modern starter, battery isolator package, halogen headlamps and performance plug leads", the two-seater also received attention to its cooling system in the shape of "a new aluminium radiator, uprated fan, aluminium header tank and Kevlar reinforced water hoses". Fitted with "externally adjustable Leda shock absorbers all-round, billet aluminium steering mounts, new wheel bearings, GT anti-roll bar / bushes and an overhauled / shotblasted / refinished rear suspension unit", its stopping power has been improved via "a high power brake servo, AP cross-drilled 315mm brake discs and modified later-type rear callipers". Inhaling via triple Weber carburettors on the correct manifold and exhaling via custom-made tubular headers linked to a stainless steel big bore exhaust system, its powerplant is fed by an uprated modern fuel pump. To the interior, the four-point competition harnesses and padded transmission tunnel lend a purposeful air (though, the Roadster pleasingly retains a toggle-switch dashboard and wood-rimmed steering wheel).
Passing through the hands of Eagle E-types in 2004, this stunning 'Lightweight' evocation is offered for sale with Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust production trace certificate, MOT certificate valid until March 20th 2008 and historic class (free) road tax until March 2008.

The 1961 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Series 1 Roadster (chassis number 850051) offered here at Autostorico is finished in Opalescent Silver Grey metallic with Black leather interior. This extremely early, outside bonnet lock specified, example was first registered to South Devon Garages on the 14th July 1961 as their demonstration vehicle. Within a month the car was then sold to Mr E.G Davies who, through his involvement in powerboat racing, was a close friend of T.E.B “Tommy” Sopwith and well known Jaguar racer John Coombes. Whilst taking part in the inaugural Daily Express International Powerboat Race from Cowes to Torquay in 1961, Mr Davies’ “Kanita” powerboat finished 11th overall having suffered from fuel problems, whilst his friend “Tommy Sopwith” went on to win in his boat “Thunderbolt” Jaguar felt that Mr Davies’s association with powerboat racing justified South Devon Garages selling their only demonstrator early. Chassis 850051 was regularly seen competing at club racing events as well as taking pride of place in support throughout the Powerboating calendar. This stunning car passed through several UK owners before being believed to be converted to its current “Semi- Lightweight” specification by marque specialist J.D. Classics in 2000/2001. The work was commissioned by ex-Ferrari F1 driver Eddie Irvine with invoices totalling over £30,000 with comfortable road/rally use in mind. Works included: sporting lightweight vented hardtop and bootlid, perspex headlamp covers, Le-Mans style sill darts, Dunlop pattern peg drive alloy wheels with spinners, fully adjustable suspension with GT anti roll bars, steering overhaul, full rewire including fitting a period look alternator, halogen headlamps, high torque starter motor and electronic ignition system, upgraded AP cross drilled brake discs and callipers, new header tank and aluminium radiator fitted, triple Webber carburettors and stainless steel exhaust system.
Offered for sale with a current V5 registration document, MOT certificate valid until August 2019 and a history file containing numerous invoices including Heritage Certificate.
This car offers the purchaser a unique opportunity to own a fine example of the most desirable early Series 1 E-Types, which will certainly appreciate further over time.

Early production, Series 1 E-types are both extremely rare and very collectable so Silverstone Auctions are very privileged to be offering, not one, but two cars from these early days in our forthcoming Silverstone Classic Online Sale.
This car ~ Chassis no. 850051 ~ was the 51st E-Type to be produced at Browns Lane (the Heritage Certificate confirms the date of manufacture as 22nd June 1961) and is part of the, historically significant, initial batch of 64 UK dealer demonstrators. It was despatched to the West Country where South Devon Garages Ltd of Torquay eagerly took delivery of their Opalescent Silver Grey demonstrator with red leather upholstery and a black soft top and they quickly sold it to its first recorded keeper, Mr E.G.Dawes of Torquay. At the time, Jaguar dealers were under strict instructions not to sell their E-type demonstrators but as a close friend of Tommy Sopwith and John Coombs, fellow powerboat racers and Jaguar racers a few strings were pulled! He appears to have upgraded the car early on for sprints/hill climbs and club racing.
The history file is comprehensive and it would be worthwhile for the car's new owner to investigate further #850051's long and intriguing history. However, with limited research, the file suggests that in 2001 the car was owned by noted Ferrari Formula One driver, Eddie Irvine, and he subsequently sent it to J.D.Classics for an upgrade to their 'lightweight replica' specification. The invoice for this totalled a substantial £25,056 and is fully detailed but, suffice it to say, the Jaguar was now in seriously fast road specification as a factory 'Lightweight Evocation' with lots of external body upgrades, including a vented hardtop, boot lid, perspex headlamp covers, Le Mans-spec front sill darts, Dunlop-pattern peg-drive alloy wheels with 3-eared spinners, and a competition-spec engine running triple Weber 48DCOEs. The cockpit was fitted with competition harnesses, racing seats and a padded transmission tunnel and under the bonnet, were many upgrades to both the engine and the brakes as fully detailed in the paperwork. It was, perhaps, the ultimate road-going E-Type spec of that era.
At one point it was purchased by Silverstone Auctions owner, Nick Whale, and used enthusiastically on fast road rallies. Later, the file shows it was sold through the auspices of, highly esteemed, Eagle E-Types as a used car worthy of their reputation. Various owners have come and gone according to the paperwork, although most recently there is an invoice on file for £215,000 when #850051 was sold by Hofmanns of Henley on Thames to our vendor.
Today, it's now in full racing competition spec and carries current FIA HTP papers for period F (1962 -1965) Class GTS 12 which are valid until 31-12-2029. The most recent MOT is dated 2018 and, as the car still has a current V5C, it is still useable on the road as well as the track, meaning this early fully-historied car is an interesting proposition for International Rallies and Tours that specialise in genuine period cars.
