Over the years it is not uncommon to see revivals of great marques, great models or indeed continuations on the theme of a great car. More often than not the company that produces them elects to take the styling of the original and uprate or modernize it to add a new dimension to an old concept, it is perhaps most common with Austin-Healeys but there have certainly been a fair share of E Types and the ‘Bouillot Helsel E Type’ is one such example. Taking the then cheapest possible derivative of the model as a basis, a right hand drive Series 1 Coupe – as designated by its VIN number, the makers converted the car to roadster and left hand drive before giving it a comprehensive restoration and general technical upgrade.

The car was originally presented at the London Motor Fair (Show) at Earls Court in 1983. For a sum of £50,000, a price in those days roughly equivalent to three or more original cars, the Bouillot Helsel E Type boasted 5 speed Jaguar synchromesh gearbox, beefed up suspension and an aesthetic makeover which was not only very striking, but far more luxurious than the original. This included matching luggage, a plush leather interior with burled walnut dashboard fascia and its own style of knock-off hubs. Boldly, the company used their own cream and burgundy throughout and a ‘BH’ insignia can be found across the headlining and on the luggage, while a chrome ‘Boillot Helsel’ signature can be found on the lower hood edge.

It is not known how successful the venture was and consultation with knowledgeable Jaguar historians such as Philip Porter in the UK suggests that this may well be the sole example although the ‘model’ is referred to in Chris Harvey’s ‘E Type. End of an Era’ and features on page 245 of this book.

Today the car records just a couple of thousand miles on its odometer. The engine compartment is clean and detailed in a matching color scheme. The vendor reports the car runs well, and is a pleasure to drive. It is a one-of-a-kind automobile and very striking in appearance, a car that everyone will notice. It represents a singular opportunity in this sale.

This is a interesting car with a nice and unique history, it was originally a coupe that was bought by "Bouillot-Helsel" and upgraded and made convertible kind of an early Eagle or Porsche Singer attempt.

They started with a coupe, because they had a lighter conversion than the original open car, reinforcing the chasis structure with lighter more modern materials. They also upgraded (and chrome) the suspension, gave it two tone paint, an upgraded interior fitted luggage, a cool wood dash, upgraded disk brakes and installed a 5 speed Jaguar synchronized suspension, effectively modernizing(1983) the car and making it a much better ride.

Since we got it, we serviced it fixed everything, changed radiator, made the body fits better and painted burgundy original color. Upgraded to wider wire wheels and tires and completely redid the red interior to cuio, removed the top(available) complemented by a custom tuneau cover.

Bouillot Helsel set out to create the ultimate E-Type. Starting with a Series 1 coupe, Bouillot Helsel removed the roof and converted it from right-hand-drive to left-hand-drive. Along with engine and suspension upgrades, the interior was trimmed with a wood dashboard, and power met the road through an upgraded five-speed manual transmission. The final product was displayed at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1983 with a staggering price of £50,000, several times that of a standard E-Type roadster at the time. It is believed that this car is likely the only example ever built.

The current owner purchased the Bouillot Helsel E-Type for his collection in 2014 and decided to give the car a more classic look while keeping all the mechanical upgrades underneath. The distinctive two-tone pale yellow and burgundy paint was redone in full burgundy and the interior was re-trimmed with tan leather. The vinyl covering over the top of the doors and on the A-pillars was replaced with chrome to give the car more classic styling. A correct E-Type steering wheel replaced the previous Nardi-style wheel, and the radio was removed. Now with styling truer to Jaguar’s original design but still with the mechanical upgrades, the Bouillot Helsel E-Type is better than ever.

This 1962 Jaguar XKE began as a right-hand-drive Series I coupe and was converted to a left-hand-drive roadster by Bouillot Helsel. The car underwent a cosmetic refresh in 2014, including a repaint in Carmen Red and a reupholstered tan leather interior, and it was acquired by the current owner in 2020. It is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six linked to a five-speed manual transmission and is equipped with 15″ wire-spoke steel wheels, power-assisted disc brakes, triple windshield wipers, a touchscreen Kenwood stereo, and a tonneau cover. This XKE Series I roadster is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner in Pompano Beach, Florida with a piece of luggage, service records, and a clean Illinois title in the owner’s name, listing it as a 1964 model year.

Previously finished in two-tone yellow and burgundy, the car was repainted burgundy in 2014. A brown tonneau cover is included, while no soft top is installed.

The 15″ wire wheels are secured by three-eared knock-offs and are mounted with Pirelli tires measuring 205/75. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors. The brake booster and master cylinder were reportedly replaced in 2021 along with the front brake lines.

The cabin features bucket seats that were reupholstered in tan leather in 2014, along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Interior appointments include tan vinyl dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, and a touchscreen Kenwood stereo.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The speedometer is inoperative, and the five-digit odometer shows 63k miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six features triple SU carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The seller states that the fuel pump was replaced in 2025. Additional work involved replacing the carburetor diaphragms, ignition rotor, points, and condenser as well as the accessory drive belt, an engine mount, valve cover gaskets, and coolant hoses.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The seller tells us the hydraulic clutch cylinder was replaced, and the shifter bushings were replaced in 2022.

The car is titled using chassis number 860402 shown on the reproduction chassis plate.
