Sold at Shannons Auction (AUST) 2011 for $90,000

1980s build

The legendary D-Type Jaguar needs no introduction to the classic car community. When it comes to a list of the most evocative sportscars of the 1950s the D-Type is invariably highly rated with its Le Mans winning pedigree, sleek lines and supremely powerful XK six-cylinder motor. In the years since, many have tried their hand at re-creating the magic of the D-Type, some more successfully than others. The Lynx vehicles are well known globally, but on an Australian scale the work of Tom Luxton cannot go unnoticed. The Luxton D-Type was created in 1982 with the middle-income enthusiast in mind, designed and built to sell for under $60,000 at a time when a well-built UK replica was moving towards $200,000 (and a real one would almost double that again). The Luxton car was built with the assistance of Bob Howe and utilised a similar construction technique to the original D-Types, with a spaceframe and aluminium panelwork. The finished product weighed around 1500 pounds and produced 280bhp, and received ADR Compliance so it could be registered in Australia.

- Original Tom Luxton D-Type Replica
- One-owner vehicle
- Dyno report shows 300bhp in 680kg vehicle

A one-owner example of the Australian-built Luxton D-Type, this fastidiously constructed machine comes with a highly tuned 3.8 litre XK motor (tuned by Len Reed) that produces some 350bhp and 310lb-ft of torque- all in a chassis weighing around 680kg. The performance is therefore breathtaking. It runs a Jaguar four-speed manual transmission and sports four-wheel disc brakes and is currently fully registered in Victoria. Sitting on original Dunlop 15 inch wheels and appropriate rubber the vehicle also comes with an original 1958 set of Dunlop Racing tyres (for display purposes only). This is a unique opportunity for an enthusiast who has always loved the D-Type shape but with even greater safety and performance- and for a fraction of the cost of an original vehicle. The D- Type will be offered registered in Victoria with the Highly Desirable plates 'D-Type' Included and a Victorian Roadworthy Certificate Supplied by the vendor after sale.

Note: Shannons advise that all potential buyers research all vehicles before purchase to authenticate originality.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
