First Registered 1964

Registration No 131 RBM

MOT Aug 2013

The E-type offered here started life in 1964 as Production No: 1738 from a total of 1799 S1 3.8L RHD FHC cars. The car was exported in the early 70s to the Island of Guernsey and subsequently re-imported late 73 to a new home at the prestigious Waterside Inn, Bray, Berkshire.

The car was purchased by the present owner in March 1993 with 26000 miles showing on the clock. The car was in running order when purchased and since then has covered just 10000 further miles during a continuing programme of upgrading, improvement and refurbishment. The 36000 recorded miles is believed to be accurate, as a large part of the cars history in the shape of MOTs and also a green log book are available for inspection.

The vendor has requested that we outline details of the work carried out during his ownership, by specialist classic Jaguar Garage, Ladd & Glen of Streatham, London

Renovation of the body work.

This project took 18 months to complete with final completion in September 2005.

The project consisted of taking the body back to bare metal with the cutting out of any filler or rust, rebuilding of interior of doors and replacement as required.

All body cavities wax oiled again with a thorough cleaning of the underside of the car followed by spraying with Body Schultz.

The project completed with 2 Pack re-spray in Jaguar Signal Red.

There is a comprehensive report by the garage as to the work involved in the project available and this is also accompanied by a full photographic record.

In 2012 it was noted that there was some fading of the 2 pack re-spray and the decision was made to re-paint. The job was given to Bailey's Coachworks of New Malden, Surrey who sanded down and re-sprayed. Again Jaguar Signal Red but using Sherwin Williams water base colour paint and a high solid HS clear lacquer

This matching Numbers, S1 3.8 E-type is offered complete with a Jaguar Heritage Certificate and Production Record Trace Certificate number 32616.

Great example, final production run of the 3.8

Number 1,738 of the 1,799 right-hand drive, Series 1 E-Types produced by Jaguar

Original, UK-delivered, right-hand drive

History file contains the buff logbook, the owner’s manual and thirteen old MOTs

A great, useable E-Type

Dating from June 25th, 1964 this is Number 1,738 of the 1,799 right-hand drive, Series 1 E-Types produced by Jaguar. The original supplying dealer was Murkett Bros. of Bedford and the first lucky owner was a Mr J.G. Marriott. It was exported to Guernsey in the early seventies before being sold and subsequently re-imported by Lionel Jeanneau to a new home at the prestigious Waterside Inn in Bray, Berkshire. The car changed hands again March 1993 with 26,000 miles showing and subsequently was subject to a continued program of upgrading, improvement and refurbishment. In 1997, it was treated to a bare metal repaint with the original Opalescent Golden Sand giving way to Jaguar Signal Red. Some fifteen years later, in 2012, it was treated to a fresh coat of Signal Red by Classic Chassis Services who also carried out a total rebuild of the engine, chassis and all major components. The work even extended to replacing the wiring loom and re-trimming the interior. The history file contains an account of the work done by Jaguar specialists Ladd and Glen of Streatham, London including Coopercraft brakes front and rear with discs, adjustable dampers all round, the dynamo and electrics were upgraded to run an alternator and a Kenlowe Fan was fitted to aid reliability. New chrome wire wheels complete with Dunlop Aquajets were fitted and performance was further enhanced by a stainless steel exhaust manifold. The history file also contains the original buff logbook, the owner’s manual and thirteen old MOTs.

This lovely, Series-1 now requires a new owner with whom to enjoy the next chapter of its life. This is a great usable E-Type, realistically guided and guaranteed to attract admiring glances wherever it goes.

1964 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES 1 3.8 FHC (collectingcars.com)

Lot #07071

private Sale

Rusper, West Sussex, United Kingdom

38,468 miles

manual

RHD

Signal Red/Biscuit leather

3.8L

VIN 861738

A very smart, low-mileage example of the iconic 1960s sports car, benefitting from a sensitive restoration and equipped with some subtle upgrades.

Under the bonnet is the original ‘numbers matching’ 3.8-litre triple-SU carburetted straight-six, which delivers 265bhp to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.

The odometer displays just 38,468 miles from new, which is believed to be entirely accurate, and is supported by the car’s maintenance history and past MOT test certificates.

First registered on 25 June 1964, this E-Type is number 1738 of just 1799 examples of the 3.8 FHC, so is one of the very last of its type.

It was supplied by dealer Murkett Bros. of Bedford and the first owner was Mr J. G. Marriott. Exported to Guernsey in the early 1970s, it returned to the UK a few years later, and was owned by a resident of the prestigious Waterside Inn in Bray. The car then changed hands again in March 1993 with 26,000 miles showing on the odometer.

Acquired by the seller six years ago, the car has formed part of a private collection, and has only covered approximately 1,300 miles during this time, while being stored in a heated, dehumidified garage and maintained by a race-car mechanic.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

This E-Type is finished in the eye-catching hue of Signal Red over a Biscuit leather-trimmed interior, and rides on period-correct 15-inch wire wheels with two-eared knock-off hub nuts.

Some discreet upgrades have been installed, including Coopercraft front and rear disc brakes, an alternator, a Kenlowe fan, electronic ignition, a stainless-steel exhaust, and Dunlop Aquajet tyres.

The car is accompanied by a significant history file containing details of its restoration, its original buff Guernsey logbook, its original owner’s manual, and a collection of historic MOT certificates.

CONDITION

There is no known bodywork damage to the vehicle since its bare-metal restoration in 2004 and subsequent respray in 2012 to correct a few paintwork issues.

The Signal Red paintwork is described by the vendor as being in fair overall condition, with a few chips and a small amount of paint shrinkage noted.

Inside, the cabin presents well, with some time-worn ‘patina’ on the leather upholstery and the trim items, as well as small scuff on the base of the passenger seat.

The only known fault is that the clock is non-functional.

The car is exempt from mandatory MOT testing due to its age.

SERVICE HISTORY

This E-Type was most recently serviced at 38,300 miles by the seller’s race-car mechanic, who replaced the engine oil and filter, gearbox oil and fuel filter. They also applied grease and performed a vehicle inspection.

Prior to this, the car is reported to have been serviced annually.

Over the past six years, the owner has replaced the oil pressure switch and rev counter.

The engine was rebuilt with new big ends and main bearing shells in July 2013 at 36,563 miles by Classic Chassis Services Ltd, who also replaced the clutch assembly.
