Car to be at auction 3/15
www.auctionsamerica.com/events/feature-lots.cfm

Auction description:
1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster
To be offered on Saturday, March 28, 2015
Estimate: $240,000 - $290,000

This is a stunning, limited ownership 1961 Jaguar XKE Series I 3.8 open two-seater with its correct drivetrain. It also happens to be an early example with flat floors and welded bonnet louvers. It bears all the special nuances associated with the first year Jaguar built their E-Type. It had undergone a comprehensive restoration to a show/driver level and, in a recent Jaguar concours, this beauty achieved a score of 97 points out of 100. It includes the recent JCNA score sheets.

It was recently given a full service, and it has been always extremely well-cared-for and stored in a climate controlled environment. This Jag is dressed in Carmen Red with a red leather interior, sports a biscuit canvas top, and comes with the original radio blanking plate. It also includes photos of the restoration and the car in bare metal, plus the owner's manual as well. During the restoration process, it was completely disassembled, the body was fitted and painted, and then wet sanded and buffed. It benefitted from new parts being installed, and the good serviceable parts being restored. All brightwork has been refurbished as needed; all mechanical, fuel, electrical, and hydraulic systems were gone through, the rear end was rebuilt and calibrated, the instruments were rebuilt, and the electrical system was gone through. With gorgeous chrome wire wheels and knock-offs, this exciting machine also displays the desirable covered headlights and fine detailing throughout. This represents very early iconic E-Type Roadster that comes complete with a letter from Coventry regarding its build information and verifying its mechanical integrity.

Just in time for this year's show season, you can own a car that is ready to be shown, admired and readily able to compete. Or, you can just take it out on those coastal roads you have had your eye on. The Series I E-Types are great investment grade cars as a whole, and an early flat floor with welded louvers is especially collectible and rare.

Seller's description:

Model Series 1 ROADSTER

This highly desirable piece of automotive history left the factory on August 1961, claiming the mark of 407th left-hand drive roadster and 21st E-type built after the final external bonnet locker series. Finished in Gunmetal over Red, the E-type was later delivered to Jaguar Cars, New York and sold to its first owner, R.G Bayley, Ohio, in September later that year.

While chassis 407 earliest years aren’t present with the car, it is understood the E-type remained in the Midwest, USA for over 45 years, during this time, 407 was fully restored, circa.1981, finished in Carmen Red, Red leather and Tan hood. The owner of 407 at the time reached out to Jaguar Cars, Browns Lane records department, with the intention of tracking the car's heritage, the car is supplied with a copy of this correspondence confirming factory specifications.

Later years, in March 2015, saw the sale of the E-type in Fort Lauderdale, which at the time, documented the car to be retaining its restored Carmen Red finish in fabulous condition and virtually all original features from flat floors and welded bonnet louvers to rear lights and cabin instruments.

The sale resulted in the delivery of the 407 to Tomini Classics, Dubai Classic and Sportscar collector, registering what is believed to be the 3rd owner. The new owner proceeded to action a full strip-down of the chassis, with the intention of restoring the mouth-watering heritage combination of Opalescent Gunmetal, Red trim and French Grey mohair hood. During this restoration, the E-type was heavily documented and today is accompanied with photographic folder highlighting the bare metal respray and other treated associated areas. As a result of years of care and loving maintenance, it was decided to retain 407’s previously restored Red leather, adding further original history to the car. Subtle and desirable reliability upgrades were also added at this time that includes a new aluminium radiator and power steering.

407 later was offered for sale and was quickly snapped up by the car’s current custodian and E-type fanatic collector from Denmark, who had the car shipped and registered in the UK September 2019. In pursuit of bridging together more of the 407’s history, the current owner discovered the E-type is heavily noted in the printed publication ‘Jaguar E-type Six-Cylinder Originality Guide’ by Dr. Haddock & Dr Mueller, a well-known and E-type bible for true enthusiasts. 407 is referenced throughout as one of the few known existing original and early E-type examples. The new Scandinavian owner reached out to the author hoping the exchange history around the car, which correspondence copies can be found in the documented history folder, along with a copy of the printed originality guide.

Following some fine-tuning and resolve of shakedown issues, 407 has been carefully maintained and dry stored. This highly sought-after example now joins the E-Type UK showroom, offering a rare investment opportunity to own a early full matching numbers, and genuine flat floor example, worthy of the finest collection.

Seen from our showroom today, presented is a beautiful condition, with the heritage correct Opalescent Gunmetal retaining a deep restoration shine and minimal signs of ware. All brightwork continues the exterior sparkle which is paired with well kept traditional chrome curly hub wire wheels on each corner. The interior holds the overall standard with its fabulously kept Red leather and clean and functional instruments. The interior also boasts a centre console plaque proudly stating the heritage and provenance of the classic. With the original and iconic 3.8L straight-six fired up with a push of the button, this beautiful example speeds comfortably along the tarmac, offering a perfect combination of classic performance paired with minor modern upgrades for a reliable driving experience.
