This chassis number was made likely in 1963. Perhaps if you researched further you would find that it is a 63, thus the alum dash and was on a car lot from 63 to 64 and then reg. as a 64 when it finally sold. That was a common occurrence.

The first 62 vin was 876421. The first 63 vin was 878863. Yours is a 1962 and with the proper vin info you could reg. it as a 62 and it would be worth close to your asking price.

John,
The date used is the titled date presumably on the registration. There are many discrepancies between title and build dates. Some are explainable some are errors but if the car is being sold as a its title date, not build date, which on this car was likely March '62. If one were to buy the car and get the JDHT one could probably sort out the discrepancy with the local DMV.

This 1962 Jaguar XKE (chassis 876921) is a Series I open two-seater originally distributed by Jaguar Cars in New York and features left-hand-drive configuration. Refinished in British Racing Green by a previous owner, the car was acquired by the seller in 2013 and then mechanically overhauled by Bob Grossman of Mighty Roar Racing. Work eventually totaled $74k and included a rebuild of the 3.8-liter DOHC straight-six, as well as refurbishing the brakes and suspension and installing a Tremec five-speed manual gearbox. Other modifications include a Dynalite alternator, screw-on oil filter, twin Holley electronic fuel pumps, an electric fan, and twin Tilton master cylinders. The seller ran the car on the 2018 Going to the Sun Rally, and service in 2019 included a valve adjustment and installing a new battery. This Series I XKE is now offered with a tool kit, service manuals, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, and a clean Montana title in seller’s name.

Chassis 876921 was built on March 15, 1962 and originally finished in Carmen Red over black. The exterior was repainted in British Racing Green in the 2000s, and Auto Weave Upholstery installed a new black Stayfast convertible top and seals in 2017.

Chrome 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with Coker 3/8″ redline tires. The braking system has been rebuilt and modified with twin Tilton master cylinders, but retains original bellows for cosmetic purposes. The suspension was serviced with new shocks and ball joints, and parts were cadmium plated where needed. An exterior walk-around video is attached above.

The low-back seats are finished in tan leather and equipped with matching lap belts. The velour palomino carpet was also installed by Auto Weave Upholstery, and the driver’s lower seat cushion was fitted with softer foam to allow for a lower seating position.

A factory wood-rimmed steering wheel is retained and frames primary Smiths instrumentation, which includes a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer. 29k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, and true mileage is unknown. The center stack retains a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio and speakers.

The replacement 3.8L straight-six was rebuilt and modified by Bob Grossman of Mighty Roar Racing in 2014 and 2015. It was fitted with new Mahle 9:1 compression pistons, main and rod bearings, and fasteners. The cylinder head was rebuilt before being reinstalled with a new timing system and head studs. The triple SU side-draft carburetors were also rebuilt, and a new water pump and starter were fitted.

A screw-on oil filter has also been added along with a positive-earth Dynalite alternator, which is housed in a dynamo case to appear as a correct Lucas generator. Twin Holley electronic fuel pumps allow for redundancy and can be switched on from under the dash. In 2016, Grossman replaced the gas tank, fuel lines, and fittings. A Flex-a-Lite LoBoy electric fan was installed in March 2019 and can also be switched on manually from inside the cabin. DNA Automotive in Arlee, Montana performed a valve adjustment and oil change in March 2019, and a new battery was installed in September.

A Tremec T5 five-speed gearbox was installed by Bob Grossman in 2016, along with a lighter aluminum flywheel, 4.2L clutch, and a new master cylinder and lines. A Bell stainless steel exhaust system was also fitted.

Over 75 pages of invoices and documentation are included with the vehicle. A selection of receipts and build summaries by Bob Grossman and the seller are provided.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust shows the factory colors and configuration, as well as build and dispatch dates. The car was originally distributed via Jaguar Cars in New York.

The seller reports that this XKE experienced no mechanical issues while taking part in the 1,500-mile Going to the Sun Rally in 2018. The car also earned first place in the foreign car category at the 2019 Billings All Original Car Show in Billings, Montana.
