This 1962 Jaguar XKE is a Series I roadster that was manufactured on June 5, 1962 and resided in California before being purchased by the current owner’s father in 1979 and subsequently relocated to Ontario, Canada. It is finished in metallic silver with a black soft top over a black vinyl interior and powered by a numbers-matching 3.8-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The suspension and brake system were refreshed in 2018, and equipment includes triple SU carburetors, 15″ wire wheels with knock-off spinners, four-wheel disc brakes, and an electric radiator fan. This Series I OTS is now offered on the current owner’s behalf with an owner’s manual, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, some service records, spare parts, and Ontario registration.

Delivered from the factory in Opalescent Silver, the body was previously refinished in red and received a repaint in its current shade of metallic silver in 1979. Chrome bumpers feature overriders as well as an Amco-style rear bumper bar. The seller notes areas of body filler, rust on the left rocker panel, a cracked turn signal lens, and several blemishes including scratches, crazing, and dents as shown up-close in the image gallery below, which also contains photos of paint-meter readings taken from along the rocker panels. A black vinyl tonneau cover is fitted, and the black soft top can be seen in its raised position below.

Factory 15″ wire wheels with two-eared knockoff spinners wear Michelin X Radial tires that are said to be dated from 1979. Work in 2018 included replacement of the shocks, rear subframe mounts, radius arm bushings, axle shafts, sway bar bushings, front wheel bearings, and upper and lower control arm bushings. The brake system was also serviced at this time with new brake calipers, rotors, pads, lines, and handbrake hardware. Corrosion is noted on the wheels and in the trunk, which houses a full-size spare as well as a factory jack and knock-off hammer.

Originally upholstered in red leather, the cabin features black vinyl low-back bucket seats, along with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpets. The dashboard houses auxiliary gauges and warning lights, as well as controls for the lighting, wipers, and ventilation. Amenities include a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel and a wooden shift knob.

Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline, and a five-digit odometer that shows just over 91k miles, approximately 16k of which have been added during current ownership. True mileage is unknown.

The numbers-matching 3.8-liter inline-six features triple SU side-draft carburetors and was factory-rated at 265 horsepower. An electric fan has been fitted, and the battery was replaced in June 2018, while an oil change is said to have been completed more recently. The seller notes that the center and rear carburetors are running rich and a cold-start video is available here. A recent compression test showed between 155psi and 165psi across all six cylinders.

Engine block stamping R5956-9 corresponds to that shown on the data tag riveted to the cowl as well as the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed synchromesh manual transmission reportedly sourced from a later model XKE. The differential seals were replaced in June 2018.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate lists a build date of June 5, 1962, along with the factory colors and the chassis, body, engine, and gearbox numbers.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
