885004 is owned by California collector and E-type enthusiast Mark Miller. It is indeed the 1961 New York Show car and the car that graced the turntable at the show. The car is (now) very original again, thanks to Mark, and was previouly in the hands of one original owner before being passed to the Blackhawk museum collection where it was partially restored. The car is currently painted a later E-type color, Golden Sand. It has been featured in a great many publications, including the Jaguar Journal and Jaguar World E-type 40th anniversary issues.

885004 was reportedly the last E-type built up by the Experimental Department of Jaguar, and was shipped to the US, and was likely shown at the 1961 New York Auto Show. Afterwards, it was reported to have been disassembled to write the service procedures for E-types. After re-assembly it was sold, and its whereabouts are not known.

According to an article in Jaguar Magazine (Australia), Edition 97 (Issue 2, 2001) pages 30-33

885004, the hallowed example in California's Behring Museum, has been 'modernised'. Example: there are two little glove boxes behind the seats of 3.8 E- Type Coupes and they are always worn out, their interiors often replaced with roof lining material. But what was the original surface? Experts like the late-Roger Woodley didn't know, neither did Philip Porter and Professor Craddock's restoration opus is mute on the subject. Eventually, we found a contact who not only confirmed they were flocked, but had repros. Joy!

Whoa! I think we need to use a little more common sense when we decide to post "information" on xkedata, especially when that information is second hand or even third hand. Just because you read something on the internet does not make it "true". Posting information in this fashion is more akin to perpetuating gossip. I believe xkedata should stick to facts.
885004 is a well docuemnted car. It has been the subject of several multi-page magazine articles in Jaguar Journal, Jaguar World and even Road and Track dating back 15 years plus. Its entire history has been painstakingly researched and is public knowledge (do your own research, read the articles written by the current owner). It has been "restored", but remains one of the most original and historically correct (and important) early E-types in existence today. I doubt that anyone in the world has done more research or can claim a higher level of knowledge of the early E-types than the owner of this car. And I'm proud to call him a friend.
As for 885004 being "modernized", I think it is unwise and potentially misleading to pull a few sentences like that out of context and offer them up as "factual". The article they were lifted from can be found here:
www.cumminscars.com/ecoupeflatfloor.html
I suggest readers who are interested in the historical accuracy of early E-types read it, and then read the excellent articles that have been printed about 885004. The author of the Australian article quite rightly points out that the interior of 885004 has been restored, or as he puts it "modernized" (an unfortunate choice of word). When we Americans hear a word like modernized in the context of 2004, we think of wide wheels, modern rubber, a 4.2 interior, an XJ6 engine and a 5-speed. Of course, this is not the case with 885004. It is a beautiful and incredibly correct example of the very first E-types. And it is something to be celebrated.

Daniel,
Sorry you feel that way. Nobody, including me, made a claim of anything being "fact" which is why I cite Jaguar Magazine as the source. You write as though I made this up. As far as being unwise to post something written in a published document that makes no sense. I didn't write the bit so if the source is incorrect then discuss it with them.. I do thank you for the information you've added to the car's data page. Anything is welcome here as long as its not malicious or misleading.

July 1996, Jaguar World, UK magazine, p 87: report that this car had been just purchased by Mark Miller of California from the Behring [sic] Museum near San Francisco to go alongside its 1961 show companion roadster (875003) which he already owned. Described as Opalescent Bronze, and "one of the best preserved of all the early E Types, having covered under 18,000 miles from new ... It remained with the same family that bought it until 1989, when it passed to the Blackhawke [sic] collection." An accompanying picture is presumably incorrectly captioned with the chassis number 885994.
