This is an incredible, matching numbers car, first generation and very early production car. According to Factory Records and as listed on the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, this Series 1 Left Hand Drive 3.8l Fixed Head Coupe was delivered to a Mr Hankey of Newport Beach California. It was the 38th left hand drive coupe built, and with the late start in the first year of production, just 398 rolled off the line at Coventry in 1961. After its early life in California, this E type found its way to Fox Island Washington in the 70's, and has remained in that area since. The last owner, an elderly British gentleman, acquired the car in 2000 and enjoyed it for several years before embarking on a painstaking and total restoration that was completed in the spring of 2014. The car was completely disassembled and taken to bare metal. All of the original body panels retained and restored and professionally refinished in Opalescent Dark Green. The chrome trim, bright work, and correct wire wheels are all new or replated and the interior is totally new, including top grade Cinnamon leather upholstery, restored original wood rim steering wheel, new carpets, new door panels, new headliner and new correct alloy dash/console fascias unique to the early Series 1 cars, tough the complete original instruments were retained. Likewise all mechanical systems including the suspension, brakes and the correct 3.8 l engine were totally rebuilt, with a few choice upgrades made for driving enjoyment, notably a manifolds-back stainless steel exhaust system, alternator and high capacity aluminum radiator. Included with purchase is an organized notebook with before, during and after restoration photographs, receipts. Also the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate and photos of the factory's hand-written production log books showing this car's build data. The very earliest Series 1 cars in the lineage of the iconic XKE are highly desirable, and this, the 38th LHD coupe built, is a premium example in every regard.

While it has been over five years since this E Type information was posted, I have two comments which may help with future restorations. If you are going to present such an E Type as an incredibly well-restored example that is a piece of history and a veritable collector's item, then it should be presented as such. All 1961 E Types, be they of the fixed-head or open two seater variety, left the factory with Lucas tri-pod PL 700 headlamps. The "regular", non-tri-pod Lucas headlamps were not used until well into 1962 production. However, a far more serious faux-pas is to substitute the original air cleaner assembly with modern, cheap, generic sponge element individual air cleaners, which didn't exist in 1961. Such amateurish touches detract from a restoration, even if the rest has been done very nicely, and renders the whole thing suspect. Potential buyers will think to themselves: "...if they skimped on such things, what else did they skimp on?..." These comments are not meant to be nasty, but simply to drive home the point that proper research and NOT cutting corners are essential for a credible restoration.

1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8-Litre Series 1 'Flat Floor' Coupé
Chassis no. 885038 Engine no. R1755-9
€ 145,000 - 175,000
US$ 170,000 - 210,000
The Autoworld Autumn Sale, Brussels
Engine no. R1755-9 •One of only 1,582 'flat floor' cars made
•The 38th of only 398 left-hand drive coupés built during the first year of production
•Matching numbers example
•Totally restored between 2010 and 2014
•Extensive restoration bills and photographs
According to its accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, this left-hand-drive Series 1 XKE - as the E-Type was known in the USA - was manufactured on 14th September 1961 and delivered new to one R P Hankey of Newport Beach, California. A very early car, it is the 38th of the 398 left-hand drive coupés built during the first year of production, which had started belatedly in February 1961. After its early life in California, this E-Type found its way to Fox Island, Washington State in the 1970s, remaining in the greater Seattle area thereafter. Its most recent owner, an elderly British enthusiast, acquired the E-Type in 2000 and enjoyed it for several years before commissioning a painstaking total restoration that commenced in 2010 and was completed in the spring of 2014.
After the car had been completely disassembled and stripped back to bare metal, all of the original body panels were restored (with the exception of the driver's door skin, which was replaced) and then professionally refinished in Opalescent Dark Green. All the chromium trim, brightwork, and correct wire wheels were either renewed or re-plated, while the interior was totally re-trimmed in premium quality Cinnamon leather and the original wood-rim steering wheel restored. The original instruments being retained, the full interior refurbishment was completed with new carpets, new door panels, new headlining, and new alloy dashboard and centre console fascias unique to the early Series 1 cars. Similarly, all mechanical systems including the suspension, brakes, and engine were totally rebuilt and a few sensible upgrades incorporated: notably alternator electrics, a high-capacity aluminium radiator, and a stainless steel exhaust system.
A logbook recording the restoration, which contains 'before', 'during', and 'after' photographs, is included in the sale. The car also comes with an owner's manual; a selection of XKE magazine advertisements; extensive E-Type literature and research; XKE Registry data and listing; a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate; a FIVA Identity Card; Belgian registration papers; and copies of the factory's hand-written production logbooks recording this car's build data. An early and highly desirable 'flat floor' benefiting from a recent bare metal restoration, this beautiful E-Type coupé ticks all the boxes.
