Just found the car advertised via an Adelaide dealer (Cant See who) on the Australian CarSales website for A$249k. The car is advertised as a June 1961 build and has Outside Bonnet Latches but that cannot be correct as this number 885039 should have been built around 14 Sep 1961 and I think that the last LHD FHC OBL was 885020..?.... The description in the ad says that it was originally a LHD US imported to Oz and converted to RHD apparently it has a 4.2 engine fitted ....From the photos the vehicle ID plate looks odd ... so not sure what the real story is ......does anyone know anything about this car....???

Chris, I think you have something there. All nearby cars before this vin are Sept build dates and sooner. The vin plate is not original. It is a poor quality restamp. Perhaps they obtained a outside release bonnet and converted it from inside release.Would be nice to see the heritage certificate....

They now have the car advertised at A$225K ......John - that ID plate is such a bad attempt ......and then the green plug leads and red coil......yuk....then there is the header tank and the 4.2 engine.....clearly there are many issues with this car ...... I wonder how many components actually came from 885039..??? Wonder if there is still a body number on the bonnet .... or a number on the picture frame...... This car has REAL provenance issues .....

Speedo and steering wheel also of a far later model.
What did you say is original?
2018-02-16 11:35:15 | Chris Eddy writes:
Maikel - fair question - it looks like it has been cobbled together with many parts off many cars ... just look at the oil pressure gauge ... everywhere you look .... yes I wonder what is in fact - Original to 885039 .... if that's under the true VIN ..???

Looks like it was sold this week ..... wonder how much ...?? Good luck to the buyer anyway it will be interesting to follow it over the years and see what they do with it ...

Looks like its back on sale via carsales.com.au with a NSW dealer this time the price is down to A$185K. Think everyone has figured out that this car has serious provenance issues .......as per the other comments above there is so much wrong with this car.....in fact there is serious doubt that much if any of 885039 is actually included in the sale...........

when I saw it at the Gosford Motor Museum they would not let me look under the bonnet - probably says a lot

Yep it's all so very wrong .... it's got an alternator and the header tank is wrong ....everywhere you look ..and what really kills me is the red coil and the green plug leads ...!! Who would put that crap on a supposedly OBL car ... but of course 885039 was built far too late to even be an OBL car... there should be some sort of Truth in Advertising case here under NSW law ... how can a licensed motor dealer advertise this car as such ...?

Don't find the car either attractive. At least not at that price.
However: the dealer is not claiming this car to be an original OBL. The car is only described with it's current features. And the price reflects this. An original OBL FHC will cost presumably at least 600k US$, if available at all

Advertised on carsales.com.au on 5 January 2022 asking AU$230,000. The seller’s description (edited) follows:
1961 USA delivered car, flat floor with external bonnet catches. This early car has been the subject of a nut and bolt restoration and has had some changes. The Engine is now a 4.2 matched up with the moss gearbox. It has been upgraded with an alternator so now is positive earth. The car was converted to RHD during the restoration. It has had minimal use since completion of the restoration. This E type presents beautifully and is mechanically in top condition. Please note that the car is a restoration from an original chassis and at this price represents great value.

Still has the previously advised issues ......... as said before it cannot be an OBL car ...... so many things wrong ..... Man that ID plate is a shocker ....

The biggest issue on that car is, that there is no indication or trace of it origin as 885039:
- no originality / Jaguar Heritage certificate
- no body no., which matches such a certificate
- no gear box no. again to match such a certificate
- no stamping on picture frame shown
885039 is a very early car and change of engine and repro VIN plate can occur. But in this case it is even more important to show, that this car is 885039.
