Car to be offered at auction 1/15/04
www.coys.co.uk/auctions/lot.php

Auction description:
An Important Auction of British and Continental Sports & Touring Cars, Toys, Models and Automobilia
Saturday 15th January 2005
Lot 270
1961 Jaguar F.I.A. Competition E-type Series 1 Fixedhead Coupé
Registration no:
Chassis no: 885223
Estimate: €37,000-40,000

This immaculately prepared car has been built in strict accordance with Appendix K of the FIA regulations for Category E and has consequently been pared down to the minimum weight limit. It features several important safety features, the most important being an anti roll cage, fire extinguisher system and completely covered safety tank.

Mechanically too the car complies with the FIA papers which were issued upon completion of the rebuild in 1997.

In subsequent seasons the car has become a successful entrant in the German GTM championship and other historic events on the continent in which it achieved numerous class wins and podium finishes. It retains the original steel shell and SU carburettors on the engine which is believed to produce something in the region of 295bhp. The engine was the subject of a rebuild in 2001 since which time the car has not returned to the track due to lack of time on the vendor's behalf.

It remains in mechanically excellent condition simply requiring another owner/driver with more time to return the car to the tracks and almost inevitably to the podium.

Car offered, not sold, at auction 6/05, in London.
www.christies.com/LotFinder/search/LOTDETAIL.ASP

Auction description:
Lot Number 47
Sale Number 7051
Lot Title 1961 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES I 3.8 FHC FIA RACECAR
Estimate 38,000 - 45,000 British pounds
Price Realized Unsold
Chassis No. 885223
British Racing Green with orange noseband and black racing interior

Engine: six cylinder in-line, chain-driven, twin overhead camshafts, triple SU carburetors, 3,781cc, c.275bhp at 5,000rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: independent, double wishbones with torsion bars to front, independent to rear, with twin coil-spring/damper units on each side; Brakes: servo-assisted discs all round, inboard at rear. Left hand drive.

While the factory had problems coping with the staggering demand of the formidable E-Type, potential owners too faced a dilemma - what which body style to opt for. Such was the capability of the E-Type that performance and handling was largely indifferent between the coupe and the roadster, thus the customer's choice was generally matched to either lifestyle or climatic factors. If we study contemporary statistics the coupe could sprint to 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds, with the roadster a mere 0.2 seconds behind despite the added chassis and body strengthening required. Of the 15,496 Series I E-Types made between 1961 and 1964 the production was evenly distributed; there were 7,827 roadsters made compared to 7,669 coupes making each body-type equal in terms of rarity.

Due to the incredible performance of the E-Type it was an instant success on the track and became a regular winner across the globe. The example we offer was originally supplied to the USA in December 1961 as a road-going fixed head coupe, yet it has spent the most recent chapter of its life in Europe before 'repatriation' earlier this year.
Following a comprehensive rebuild in 1997, German FIA papers (eligible for use until the end of 2005) were acquired and it competed regularly in Germany until 2001 when the engine was rebuilt, since which it has not been raced. In the last few months the car has been extensively overhauled to ready it once again for track use and great attention has been paid to ensure the car conforms to the regulations stipulated in the FIA Appendix K category.

At a cost of nearly £18,000 the fastidious list of improvements includes a rebuilt limited-slip back axle (a spare Lynx unit, not legal for FIA events, also accompanies the car), complete overhaul of the brake system, new bushes, new shock absorbers and reworked pedal box. Again necessitated for the FIA, a new 80 litre 'ATL' bag-tank has been installed along with a new 'Safety Devices' roll cage, 'OMP' seats, 'Willans' five-point harnesses and a 'Fire Fighter' extinguisher system - importantly all certificates attesting to the eligibility and life-span of these items accompany the car. Recently tested on a rolling road, the engine (running on triple SU carburettors) produced a potent 275bhp at the rear wheels and despite the side-exit exhaust it managed to pass a UK MOT. With the intended use being for touring events or long distance racing a 'Kenlowe' fan was fitted. The dashboard, which features a 'Stack' rev-counter and an array of 'Racetech' gauges has been completely re-wired and altered for improved ergonomic operation. Featuring other allowed modifications such as 'Perspex' windows (a new windscreen was also recently fitted) and cooling scoops for the rear brakes, this attractive E-Type sitting on D-Type style wheels with brand new 'Avon' tyres is poised for action. Visual condition is reported to be very good throughout whilst the aura of a classic racecar remains, nonetheless the paint is reported to produce a fine finish.

UK road registered, the only outstanding work required (prior to track use) would be for a full geometry check. Included in the file are all recent receipts and aforementioned certificates including necessary papers for FIA renewal. This early E-Type racecar offers a wide variety of applications for a number of prime events and is worthy of serious consideration.

Hello my name is David. I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I just acquired an engine for a Jaguar E Type. Unless I am losing my mind the serial number is C20012FF...it is located on the right side just under the cylinder head and prominently reads C20012FF. On the top of the engine on the Head is number RA2606-9... These seem to be the correct original engine numbers for the E type I see listed here. I think someone MIGHT BE interested in this engine to make the car 100% Correct... If you would like to discuss or have any questions just drop me a line. I'm not sure if you are interested in this engine for your restoration? The best way to reach me is to text my cell phone as I do not answer unknown numbers...or you can email me as well. 610-945-4015

Car now offered at:

Seller's description:

1961 chassisnummer 223

Gunmetal grey

Completely restored several years ago

€ 179.900

Our '61 E-type Series 1 proudly bears the chassis number "223" and is therefore one of the earliest E-types to leave the Browns Lane Factory, which means that it now rings a bell with many purists, due to its extremely early chassis number, this car one of the most sought after 'Flat Floor' versions. An E-type as a collector's item carries a chassis number the earlier the better, and this is exactly one that meets all these requirements.

The car was completely nuts and bolts restored a few years ago and is still in its beautifully restored condition to this day. The beautiful color combination of the Gunmetal Gray bodywork in combination with the black leather interior is on everyone's wish list. The beautiful coupe body was completely restored to its original state according to the rules of art and still looks like new to this day, just like the interior. The leather bucket seats not only look a must on an E-type, but are also extremely pleasant to sit in, ready for any comfortable ride.

The engine starts in a flash and brings to life the hum of the powerful 6-cylinder hidden under the bonnet. The upgraded 5-speed transmission perfectly brings out 265 hp in every gear and makes it a pleasure to drive both long and short distances with this car.

Is it a trip to the south of France or a short Sunday drive along the Belgian coastline? Everything is possible!

This highly sought after Jaguar E-type Flat Floor is now available at Rock 'N Roll Classics.
