Car was at auction in 2012
www.classic-auctions.com/Auctions/24-05-2012-ThePavilionGardens-1313/1962JaguarE ...

Auction description:
Lot Number: 42
1962 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Coupe
Sold For £27,083
Reg Number: GAS 971
Chassis Number: 887257
Engine Number: T.B.A.
Cc: 4200
Body Colour: Maroon
Trim Colour: Black
MOT ExpiryDate: April 2013

This splendid looking Maroon-coloured E-Type Coupe started life as a Federal specification 3.8-litre car. On repatriation from California in the '90s it was subjected to a respray, general overhaul, conversion to alternator and negative earth plus the fitting of a 4.2-litre engine. On acquiring the Jaguar some 10 years ago, the vendor replaced the first 4.2-litre engine with another one, reputedly complete with 'big-valve' head. The original gearbox was jettisoned in favour of a five-speed Getrag unit, the car converted to right-hand drive and the front brakes uprated with Coopercraft ventilated discs and four-pot callipers. At the same time the radiator was also upgraded and a 16-inch cooling fan fitted. More recently, 'GAS 971' has been treated to a further bare metal respray, new seats and 6.5J wheels in place of the 5J originals.

The vendor believes the body panels are all original and nowadays regards the bodywork and paintwork as "very good" and the interior trim, gearbox and engine as "good"; though he notes that while the XK motor "shows more than healthy oil pressure, it does consume some oil". The E-Type is being sold complete with a CD of some of the work done, the original Moss gearbox and a few other spares, plus an MOT into April 2013 and will be driven to the auction.

For sale at Whitewood Classics near Buckingham at £89,950. Seller's description below. The URL is

An early E Type with the sought after bucket seats and alloy dash. The car has been very lightly used in the past 10 years and is currently undergoing small cosmetic work to bring her to concours condition. The car was imported from California about 20 years ago and converted to RHD.

It is currently fitted with the more desirable 4.2 straight six Jaguar engine linked to a five speed gearbox, we have the original 3.8 engine and Moss gearbox which is available by separate negotiation. The car comes with the following: wide sports chrome wire wheels, uprated suspension, Coopercraft brakes, extensive file on history and work carried out on the car. Totally rust fee example.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
