Lot #129854

This 1963 Jaguar began life as an XKE Series 1 coupe and was modified in the style of an E-Type Lightweight in the 1980s using aluminum bodywork hand-fabricated by RS Panels of Warwickshire, England. The car is said to have participated in vintage races across Europe and the UK, including events at Brands Hatch, Spa, Nürburgring, and Le Mans, before receiving an overhaul of its 3,868cc DOHC inline-six in 2017. The car was then purchased by a Pittsburgh race shop who performed refreshes of the underside, running gear, electrical system, and interior. Finished in Opalescent Silver Blue, the car is equipped with triple Weber carburetors, dry-sump lubrication, an auxiliary oil cooler, a Getrag five-speed manual transmission, staggered-width 15” Dunlop-style alloy wheels, a vented aluminum hardtop, a roll cage, a fuel cell, aluminum seats trimmed in black leather, and six-point harnesses. This E-Type Lightweight re-creation was purchased by the selling dealer in 2023 and is now offered in South Huntington, New York, with an FIA Historic Technical Passport, a set of custom-made mufflers, and a clean Pennsylvania title.

The E-Type Lightweight was developed by Jaguar in 1963 in response to Ferrari’s introduction of the 250 GTO the year prior and featured an aluminum monocoque and body panels in place of the production E-Type’s steel elements. This re-creation is based on the underpinnings of a 1963 XKE coupe and is said to have been built in the 1980s using aluminum bodywork fabricated by RS Panels, a marque specialist that was founded in the 1960s out of the UK.

The body and removable hardtop are finished in Opalescent Silver Blue with white roundels on the door panels. Features include drilled vent panels on the roof and trunk lid, sliding plexiglass side windows, faired headlights, leather hood straps, and a Monza-style fuel filler cap. Dual side mirrors and replacement headlight buckets were fitted in 2019 by Zappa Racing of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Various imperfections can be seen in the photo gallery below

Dunlop-style 15″ alloy wheels are secured via three-eared knock-offs that were re-chromed in 2019, at which time 25.5×8.0 front and 26.5×9.5 rear Hoosier TD tires were mounted. Additional work reportedly included rebuilds of the brake calipers with stainless-steel pistons utilized in the inboard rear units as well as replacement of the rotors and pads. The wheel bearings are also said to have been replaced, and the steering rack was rebuilt with custom bushings.

The right-hand-drive cockpit houses a pair of aluminum bucket seats that were fitted during the Zappa Racing refresh in 2019 and are trimmed in black leather, while matching upholstery is attached to the console, sills, and rear shelf via snaps. Additional features include a body-color roll cage, Schroth six-point racing harnesses, a polished shifter, diamond-plate pedals, and a fire suppression system.

The quick-release three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of an Elliot 8k-rpm tachometer and a Smiths 160-mph speedometer. Auxiliary gauges to the driver’s left monitor fuel pressure, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and oil temperature, while a pair of rally timers were fitted on the passenger side of the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 59k miles, fewer than 100 of which have been added under current ownership.

The XK inline-six was reportedly overhauled in 2017 by Steinke Sportwagenservice of Hamburg, Germany, and features a bore increase for a displacement of 3,868cc with additional modifications including dry-sump lubrication, triple Weber 45 DCOE carburetors, an oil cooler, an aluminum radiator, and dual electric fuel pumps. The fuel cell shows an expiration date of 2020.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Getrag five-speed manual transmission that was reportedly removed and inspected in 2019, at which time the driveshaft and axle U-joints are said to have been refreshed. The underside was reportedly stripped during the project, after which the wheel wells and areas under the independent rear suspension assembly were repainted. The driver’s floor has been lowered, and front jacking points have been added. The exhaust system was also refinished, and a set of mufflers fabricated during the project is included in the sale.

The FIA Historic Technical Passport is valid through the end of 2028 and lists the car’s specifications. A Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate for the donor 1963 XKE coupe is included.

Chassis number 887512 is stamped on the front frame as well as in the body number position on the chassis plate, and it is listed as the VIN on the Pennsylvania title.
