Sellers description:
BaT Exclusive: 1964 Jaguar E-Type 3.8L Coupe

This 1964 Jaguar 3.8L E-Type Coupe (car number 889832) is a matching number example offered by the third documented owner who bought it in 1999. Documentation includes evidence of shipment of the vehicle from the UK through New Orleans in early 1964, many of the annual Indiana “BMV” registration slips from the second owners of 33 years, and the original tan vinyl Jaguar folder which includes the original Operating, Maintenance, and Service Handbook, Maintenance Voucher book, Warranty, Maintenance Chart, etc. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Production Record Trace Certificate #15402, dated 2/23/2000 confirms the “date vehicle built: 10 January 1964” as well as the matching numbers status from factory records. There is no rust on the car, as it has been well preserved for the past 25 years, especially since 1999, and garaged always. It was painted in 1986 and had full mechanical rebuilding (as detailed below) by specialist Terry Lippincott in 1999-2000. It is available in Malvern, Pennsylvania for $44,900.

The car had been parked in the previous owner’s daughter’s garage for three years and needed mechanical attention when the current seller bought it. He trailered the car back to the shop of vintage racer and Jaguar restoration specialist, Terry Lippincott, of Lippincotts’ Garage in Sinking Spring, PA. A complete mechanical restoration followed. They did not repaint the exterior of the car. The 1986 BASF Glasurit, single-stage paint was in excellent shape and minimal change was sought, however the car’s mechanicals–largely forward of the firewall, but including the trans and rear suspension—were removed and rebuilt, including the engine, front tube frames plus suspension & brakes. Lippincott’s detailed repair file (mainly 1999-2000) is available to visitors.

Work performed by Terry Lippincott:

Suspension &Brakes:
-Full rebuild of front and rear, with all new ball joints and bushings. Includes new Koni Classic (black) adjustable shocks, front and rear—set firm @ 4 of 5.
-Cad plating on upper & lower wishbones and stub axle carriers was renewed.
-Steering rack rebuilt, including new rt. side bronze bushing & steering rods.
TIRES: BF Goodrich Comp TA 225/60/ZR15 tires mounted on new 6-inch Dayton stainless steel wheels. (N.B. The widest tires to fit on stock Jag-5-inch rims [without rubbing] are 205’s. A 215 tire on stock rims will rub, especially at rear bump stops. The 6-inch Dayton wheels (w/ stronger stainless steel spokes) can easily accommodate a 225 tire, with no rubbing. The 225s “fill out” the wheel well, and give an E-Type a better stance, and a far better ride).
Brakes: Front & rear caliper bodies blasted & repainted, plus all new bolt-on brake cylinder units installed, plus new pads. Both front master cylinders replaced (new OE, not just re-sleeved).

1964 Jaguar E-Type For Sale Rear

Interior:
-Original headliner & dash (by this VIN# in ‘64, no more aluminum dash panels on 3.8s).
-Carpets: New wool replacement floor coverings from SNG Barratt.
-Seats: New, more comfortable, Series-1, 4.2L-style seats, in black Connolly leather, also from SNG Barratt. Professionally re-covered by Lippincott’s upholstery specialist.
-Original 3.8L-style (coupe/wider) seat frames come with the car (see photo).
-Four-point seat belts installed.
-Original rear deck cover with ribbing is in excellent shape.
-Radio is the original Blaupunkt unit from 1964. Car is converted to Neg. Ground, so radio is non-functioning.
-Steering wheel is an aftermarket, 15-inch, wood rim replacement for the original 16-inch unit. A stiffer and stronger wheel than the original.
Original Engine Rebuild:
Engine #-RA5055-9
-Re-bored to .030 oversize, with new cast aluminum pistons;
-Crankshaft machined to .020” undersize
-Crankshaft, flywheel and pressure plate specially balanced as a single unit,
for silky
smoothness;
-Oil pressure reads above 45 psi@ 2500 rpm;
-Performance cam upgrade, giving a smooth idle but pulling stronger through entire RPM range;
-Triple SU carbs cleaned and rebuilt and buffed out, along with all aluminum intake
piping;
-New water pump, new Griffin aluminum radiator & auxiliary fan, new Hi-torque starter;
-All under-bonnet aluminum parts polished to mirror finish;
-Exhaust manifolds re-glazed (some cracking currently);
-New, exhaust system (stainless-steel mufflers);
-Firewall and attached tube frames brilliantly repainted to a matching red, which, coupled with the shine of a rebuilt engine, gives that spotless, breathtaking effect upon raising the bonnet.

Again, this engine rebuild and improvements were performed entirely by Terry Lippincott, the best in the business, with over 40 years of XK engine rebuild experience.

Transmission:
-Installed Lippincott-rebuilt, full synchro, 4 speed, late Series-1 box.
-Matching # original “crash box” comes with vehicle [Box #EB13145JS-see photo].
-New, stock clutch, and all new U-joints installed. Drive shaft re-balanced.
-Original 3.54 diff/pumpkin replaced with 3.31:1 unit for lower Tpk. RPMs. Per page A.5 of the Factory Service Manual, a reduction from 2775 to 2619 RPM @ 60 MPH results.

The car can be seen at Lippincott’s Garage upon request. The original rubber windshield molding is cracked in places and there is some minor pitting on the right, forward chrome bumper blade. The left front over rider has 2 small dents (see photo). All other bumpers are in very good condition. A few very small dings can be identified on the driver’s door, but you must look hard to see them. Five tiny chips are barely visible on the front bonnet opening, each no more than pin head size. A similar very tiny chip appears near the gas filler door. This car is not a trailer queen, but certainly, it is better and cleaner than a driver. Though it does have a few minor flaws, given the engine and suspension work, and the look and feel of the 225 tires, it is likely one of the finest E-Types to drive.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
