The engine number should be stamped in two different locations (besides the data plate itself). First is on the center V of the cylinder head on the back side of the area between the two cam covers. This is just in front of the first spark plug. The other location is on the cylinder block just above where the oil filter housing bolts on (under neath the carb side of the engine). This is the horizontal part of the oil filter housing boss that is cast into the lower side of the block.
