Auction DetailsSeller Type Trade

Town Langeskov

Location International

Country Denmark

Highly appointed example of the ever-desirable E-Type

Impressive red paintwork with chrome trim and black vinyl interior

4.2L six-cylinder engine with automatic transmission

Sadly we don’t know much about the history of this car

Manufactured in March 1970

First registered in December 1970

Car is reportedly ‘matching numbers’

The vendor informs us the red paintwork is not original, however, we cannot confirm the factory finish

Indicates 94,045 miles - however, this is on a five-figure odometer and can’t be verified

Reportedly underwent a mechanical overhaul in 2019

Paperwork file includes:

Jaguar handbook

A small selection of invoices

Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate

The Interior

Original interior with leather seating

Stylish wood-trimmed steering wheel

All period features intact, with a sympathetically installed Pioneer radio system

Perhaps one of the most engaging dashboards in Jaguar history, the E-Type confronts the driver with an array of aircraft-style switches and tactile instruments. With the jet-black aesthetic and a distinctly sporty stance, it’s an evocative piece of design.

Everything here is carrying a distinct age-commensurate patina, but appears sound, with no major rips or tears we can highlight to the supple seats or door cards. The carpets show a certain level of wear, as does the headlining, but it only adds to the car’s distinct, pleasant interior.

The dashboard appears clean and well-kept, with a level of wear commensurate with the car’s venerable years. All of the instruments are reportedly in good working order, save the odd bit of worn print or finish. However, it’s all clean and readable.

We can spot the odd suspect bend or wonky switch, but with no fiddling having taken place here, it’s of little wonder for such a highly original car.

The boot is in fine fettle with no issues we can highlight, with a surprising amount of space for what’s ostensibly a compact little sports car.

The Exterior

Impressive red paintwork with chrome trims

Highly impressive original condition

Distinctive body shell

Car comes complete with an extra set of wheels and a cover

With its long nose, curvy cabin and distinctive front profile, there’s no mistaking an E-type. It’s here where the model really does shine, and arguably where much of its legend lies.

This example, with perfectly lined-up bodywork and red paintwork, is a sparkling ambassador to the E-Type’s ever-beloved aesthetics. We can, of course, spot a few blemishes - the door edges are showing some signs of paint loss, as does the odd panel seam or the edge of the wheel arches. There’s the odd hairline scratch or swirl too, but the car itself still looks superb from but a step away.

The glasswork and lenses present nicely, with no chips or fractures, while the chromework is nicely presented and carries only the slightest patina. From what we can tell, it’s all original and adds a superb contrast to the paintwork.

The car is sitting on its original wheels, which are nicely polished with resplendent branding. The tyres they’re carrying look a little older, but still carry plenty of tread.

Underneath, the car looks clean and solid, with no major signs of corrosion.

The Mechanics

Powered by the Jaguar 4.2L XK 6-cylinder engine

3-speed automatic transmission, installed exclusively on the 2+2 model

Mechanically overhauled in 2019

The XK powerplant is still a trusty old bit of mechanics, and this one appears to have been nicely cared for. The engine bay is clean and well-kept, with no major issues we can highlight, and there is no sign of leaks or major corrosion we can spot.

The car is reportedly starting and running well, with no major faults reported by the vendor. With its strong acceleration, distinctive aesthetics and that ever-iconic six-cylinder exhaust note, it’s no wonder these cars have become so beloved.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
