Welcome to my auction for this handsome British Racing Green E-Type 2+2 V12! It’s a beautiful car in person and drives great! No issues to cause concern for a long road trip.

The car’s history: the owner, for whom I’m selling it on BaT, inherited it from his deceased father, who was a partner (with son) in a Los Angeles law firm and owned it 30-plus years. He used the Jaguar as his daily commuter, from the San Fernando Valley to downtown LA every day. It wasn’t a trailer queen or used only on third Tuesdays…it was used daily, and that accounts for the higher-than-normal accumulated mileage.

That said, he maintained the car as a dead-reliable, luxurious conveyance and money was never an object. This is apparent in the ongoing repairs and upgrades carried out—even those that were premature or simply unnecessary. He loved to spend money on his Jag!

From a full nut-and-bolt V12 engine rebuild in 1994, to the swapping of the standard 4-speed manual gearbox for a superior Tremec 5-speed (with a .83 overdrive 5th gear for relaxed high-speed cruising); the addition of a lightweight aluminum flywheel and a power booster for the clutch, to ongoing suspension refreshing, rubber mounts and such throughout the car, etc., he made this car run and drive and ride like new—or better in some instances. If the shop suggested a future repair for such-and-such, he said “do it now!” You can get a feel for his lavishing of care (and money) on this car from the numerous work orders in the Gallery.

I’ve driven and ridden in the car. It was a hot Southern California summer day when we did the photo shoot and videos. You can see the engine temperature stayed right at Normal, the oil pressure stayed at 40psi, and the A/C was ice cold! It’s a damn good motor!

The body is straight—no evidence of any accident damage prior to his ownership (and none during). The repaint in BRG still shows beautifully, with a few flaws I’ve noted in the Gallery with closeups. In the auction text and invoices you’ll notice that the driver’s floor was replaced. Why? Apparently there was some ongoing moisture source in his parking garage at the office that, over the years, caused corrosion on the driver’s floor. The details are not clear, but he had Steve’s Jaguar (where most of the maintenance and repairs were carried out, and a highly respected Jaguar restoration shop) do a full replacement of that floor, using a correct sheet metal panel from Martin Robey, UK. Additional floor reinforcements were fabricated as well during the installation. There is no visible rust under the car. The scraped mufflers is testament to a tall driveway entrance at a prior residence. No leaks however.

The owner, while lavishing money on the car’s mechanical and electrical systems, didn’t go overboard on the esthetics unseen from outside the car. Hence, the engine itself and the underside of the car are pretty much as they were, and we did not detail either in preparation for the photos, so you would know what you’re getting, and see how dry it is under there. This is attested to by the presence of intact spider webs in some of the images!
