This beautifully restored 1971 Jaguar E-type 4.2 Series 2 Convertible, finished in Silver Gray with black leather, is being sold by the daughter of the deceased owner to settle the estate of her late father. She writes that the E-type was fully restored to original condition with no modifications in 2007-’08. Series 2 E-types, produced between 1969-’71, are noted for a 4.2-liter engine that is “torquier and more relaxed” than the early 3.8-liter cars, according to Hemmings’ Mark McCourt.
POWERTRAIN
The Jaguar XK 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six features a cast-iron block, aluminum head, 9:1 compression and two Zenith-Stromberg 175 CD2SE carburetors for the U.S. The engine was rated at 246 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 263 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm when new. A fully synchronized Jaguar four-speed manual transmission provides power to the rear end, with its independent suspension. The engine is believed to be original according to the seller, who says that recent starts have been made aided by a battery charger as the E-type has been undriven. The transmission is said to shift with no issues. No leaks or weeps are reported from either the engine or transmission. Both the engine and underbonnet area display very cleanly.
EXTERIOR
The body structure and Silver Gray finish date from a 2007-’08 restoration and are described by the seller as “rust-free” and “excellent, with no blemishes,” as seen in the photos provided. All chrome trim appears to be complete and brightly polished. The glass is described as “good.” No issues or leaks are reported with the seals, although a rear body seal appears to be pinched between the rear deck and bumper. A black vinyl convertible top and rear window can be observed, with no reported blemishes. All lights are complete and believed by the seller to be fully operational, including the period correct Lucas PL Tripod headlamps. The trunk area is fully finished and with a jack and spare knock-off locking ring.
INTERIOR
The black perforated leather seats are substantially more comfortable and supportive than those found in earlier Series 1 E-types. The seller identifies the condition of the seats as “excellent with no cracks or tears,” noting that the driver’s seat reclining mechanism needs adjustment. The 15-inch wood-rim steering wheel, with drilled alloy spokes, is mounted on a collapsible steering column and appears fresh with only a single scratch noted. The dashboard also appears to be complete, with no reported blemishes, and displays Series 2 upgrades of rocker switches and a locking glove box. The seller states that all gauges are functional to the best of her knowledge, including the odometer. It reads 34,167 miles, which may be original.
The three-band (AM/FM/SW) in-dash radio is also identified by the seller as original. All interior trim is complete, per the seller, with manual window lifts and locks. The carpet and protective mats are described as “good,” as is the frame and underside of the convertible top that still retains the original manufacturer’s tag dated 2008. No issues are reported with the heat, and no air conditioning is observed in the photos.
CHASSIS
The semi-monocoque structure of the E-type, with a front subframe, four-wheel independent suspension, and disc brakes evolved directly from Jaguar’s Le Mans-winning D-type. No issues are reported with the rack-and-pinion steering. Suspension service is identified by the seller as “unknown,” although the bushings and shocks are described as “good.” The 15-inch polished wire wheels appear to present very cleanly in the photos. The age of the whitewall tires is identified as “unknown” by the seller and the DOT date codes are not readable. It is noted that the four tires are mismatched, with three 195-15 Michelin X radials and one 185-15 Dunlop Sport SP radial, the latter mounted on the driver’s left front.
DOCUMENTATION
The seller, representing the estate of her late father, states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Utah title in the name of the deceased. This 1971 Jaguar E-type 4.2 Series 2 Convertible is one of 8,627 Series 2 roadsters produced and is said to have undergone a complete restoration in 2007-’08 to an apparent very-high standard with no modifications from original.
