Car to be at Coy's auction 6/06
www.coys.co.uk/auctions/lot.php

Auction description:
Fine Motor Cars & The Jaguar Legend Saturday 24th June 2006
Lot 239
1962 Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupe Recreation
Registration no: USL 828
Chassis no: 860182
Estimate: £58,000-70,000
There is a Heritage Certificate that confirms that this car was manufactured on the 22 January 1962, chassis number 860182, a silver/grey 3.8 litre fixedhead coupe right-hand drive E-Type Jaguar. It was used for club racing throughout the 1970's and 80's finishing up as a fairly extreme 'modsports' special. (pictures can be found in the history file)

In 1995, it was purchased from Fred Cliffe, a respected E-Type racer, in component form but with all the mechanical components totally rebuilt and ready for installation. Simon Dunford, who worked at Lynx, on the restoration of the actual Lindner/Nocker Low drag coupe, was commissioned to build a replica after he had started his own company in 1998. Apart from the floorplan and bulkhead. The car is all aluminium assembled exactly as the original car with even the side windows made of plexiglass. The front frames were all replaced and especially strengthened for competition. All the final preparation of the car was carried out by Beacon Hill Garage at Hindhead who themselves were racing a similar car. There are two sets of peg drive Dunlop magnesium wheels and spinners, one set has Dunlop 'M' section CR65 racing tyres with the other shod with road tyres as presented. The discs are ventilated and fitted on appropriate bells for competition. Brake balance can be accessed via controls on the dashboard and all lines are 'Aeroquip'. The suspension set-up was undertaken by Beacon Hill with the rear made up with 350lb roadspring special bottom wishbones and AVO adjustable shock absorbers. The front consists of competition anti-roll bar with competition torsion bars and adjustable Koni shock absorbers. The differential was rebuilt to 3.54 limited slip spec. and the gearbox is all synchro close ratio rebuilt by Dave Butcher of DJB Engineering with the steering rack also to comp spec. DJB Engineering were also responsible for the engine. A total rebuild included a fully ported big valve head, special springs and racing camshafts. The inlet manifold was developed in the 1960's with triple twin choke Weber carburettors. Mike the Pipe fashioned the exhaust and high compression pistons and crank. The engine has been given a rolling road figure of 300bhp. OSL 828 has been completely rewired with all instrument overhauled with the addition of a new high torque starter. There is also a 'Terratrip' trip computer installed giving accurate time and distance readings. A new 2-speed Kenlow suction fan is attached to the re-cored radiator, a Lynx oil cooler kit with braided pipes and 32 row oil cooler and ally header tank. The fuel tank is an aluminium foam filled unit with Le Mans filler cap and Facet electric fuel pump. Internally, the cockpit has been retrimed in black with grey roof lining, high side bucket seats by Corbeau with multi-point Willens safety harnesses. Further safety features include a master switch and fire extinguisher (fully primed) and a braced rollover bar. This represents an extremely competent racing/sport car with the added flexibility of superb build quality coupled with prodigious power. A big cat in wolfs clothing.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
