Bonhams MPH July Auction

17 Jul 2021, 13:00 BST

Registration no. 7806 UK

Chassis no. 860418 Odometer reading: 13,816

MOT: Exempt

*Early Series I rolling project

*Matching numbers

*Structurally sound

*Ideal for restoration

Presented is a rare opportunity to acquire an early 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I Fixed Head Coupe. Sold as a project, the car has been in storage for approximately 15-20 years and will require a full restoration. The mileage is remarkably low as a result, and the odometer shows just 13,816 miles. It's also reported to be moveable, and there is air in the tyres (the brakes are not seized). Sadly there is little history with the car bar its original buff logbook, however it comes from single ownership since 1971. It was originally finished in Gunmetal grey but was resprayed in the 1960s prior to the present vendors ownership to the current purple colour that you see today. Structurally the car is in good condition and is remarkably solid, however there is some rust appearing in places, such as on the NSR wheel arche and rear window surround. This is a matching numbers vehicle.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
