This is an early Series One E-Type with a particularly interesting history. Chassis 875763 was a "normal North American Market Export model but fitted with a speedometer calibrated in kilometers per hour rather than miles per hour.
She was assembled at the end of the Summer break and completed in October of 1961, then flown new to Japan the last week of October, 1961. Jaguar Club Japan records confirm that this is one of the earliest E-Types imported to Japan and further indicated that it was a "Motor Show Car" from new and then on display with Jidosha Jaguar Cars Japan for promotional events at various other shows, races and trade events before finally being sold and delivered to the first owner.
Normally we would have expected an E-Type sold new to the Japanese market to have been a right-hand-drive model but the Daimler Jaguar Heritage Trust records confirm that this E-Type was ordered specifically as a Type 875 (Left-Hand-Drive) "Export" version. It has been well known in Japan since new and we were only able to learn about the car and complete the purchase as a result of buying another early E-Type a few months ago.
Until our purchase and importation, this E-Type was always in Japan which makes it even more unique but not enough to change the value... unless you are a Japanese E-Type enthusiast.
This Series One OTS Roadster has all the ultra early "odd-ball" features of the hand assembled first series cars except it is just late enough not to have the outside bonnet latches. The welded in bonnet louvres are the easiest give-away that it is one of the earliest of the cars built. A peak under the car reveals the flat "floor pans" as well and the interior and trunk details are also dead-giveaways to the car's early construction nature.
Both accident and corrosion free, this is a fantastic matching numbers example

Lot 8535 at the Collecting Cars on line Classic Car sale on 27 February 2022. Sold for £89,000. Abbreviated seller's description below.
www.collectingcars.com/for-sale/1961-jaguar-e-type-series-1-3-8-roadster
- This 1961 E Type Series 1 OTS is a very smart example of the straight floor welded louvre Roadster, with intriging provenance.
- It is powered by a 3.8 litre straight six engine, fed by triple SU Carburettors producing around 265bhp, which is sent to the rear wheels via a four speed manual transmission.
- The car retains the features that distingush it as an early sought after Series 1 model.
- This example boasts an unusual combination of attributes. Originally a North American export, the car was then imported into Japan and recorded as a Japan market car, specified as LHD with the speeometer in km/h.
- The Jaguar Club in Japan confirm the car is well known in their country, and was used as a motor show car for promotional purposes by Jidosha Jaguar Cars Japan.
- The odometer indicates 12,998 kms, but the true mileage from new is understood to be about 130,000 kms.
- Has all the early features associated with the hand assembled Series 1 cars, including welded in bonnet louvres, flat floor pans and interior and boot details.
- Built on 12 October 1961 as shown on the Heritage Certificate, it was first registered in the UK on 3 June 2013.
- Finished in a striking combination of Carmen Red with Biscuit leather interior and a black roof.
- The car is accident and rot free, features a matching numbers engine, and has recently been restored.
- Fitted with Pirelli Cintuato tyres with chrome wire wheels in 2017.
- The interior features a wood rim steering wheel and aircraft style toggle switches within a pressed alluminium dash.
- Sale includes the original manuals and handbooks, a complete tool kit and maintenance invoices from its time in the UK.

This Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 ‘Flat Floor’ OTS is understood to have been used early in its life to promote the car at Japanese motor shows. It retains its original character and features that mark it out as an early model, and has been refinished in the popular combination of Carmen Red over Biscuit. Reported to be running well, with no known mechanical issues, it would be a fine addition to any assembly of iconic classics.
