Private Party Or Dealer: Dealer

This 1969 Jaguar XKE Series II roadster is said to have been sold new in California and spent approximately 20 years in Florida before it was acquired by the current owner in 2020. The car is finished in black over matching upholstery, and it retains a 4.2-liter inline-six paired and a four-speed manual transmission. Features include a black soft top, chrome wire wheels, twin Stromberg carburetors, and a Nardi steering wheel. Service performed in preparation for the sale reportedly included the installation of new spark plugs and new ignition components as well as a cleaning of the carburetors. Sorting of the drivetrain, brakes, suspension, fuel system, interior, and body is recommended prior to regular use. This XKE project is now offered on dealer consignment with a Florida title.

The car is said to have been previously finished in silver and was repainted in its current black under previous ownership. Features include taillights located below the rear bumper, wrap-around chrome bumpers with overriders, a mirror mounted to the driver’s door, side reflectors, and open headlights. Paint bubbles are noted on the front bonnet.

Chrome 15” wire wheels are secured by three-lobed knock-off hubs and are mounted with Kumho Steel Belted 722 radial tires. The black soft top features a plastic rear window and can be seen in the gallery. The car has not been driven on the road under current ownership, and service of the suspension and brakes is recommended prior to regular use.

The cockpit features bucket seats trimmed in black upholstery along with a matching dash pad, door panels, and center console. The rearview mirror is missing along with the lower dash console and footwell carpets, and there is a tear in the driver’s seat.

The Nardi steering wheel features a Jaguar center cap and frames Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer as well as an analog clock and auxiliary gauges in the center of the dash. The five-digit odometer shows just over 45k miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six breathes through twin Stromberg carburetors and was factory rated at 246 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. Service performed in preparation for the sale reportedly included the installation of new spark plugs, ignition points, and a distributor cap as well as a cleaning of the carburetors. Sorting of the fuel system is recommended prior to use.

Engine block stamping 7R1763–9 matches the chassis plate in the gallery. The cylinder head is said to have been replaced under previous ownership according to the selling dealer.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. Previous underside sheet metal repairs is visible, along with underside corrosion.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
